Local file sharing with USB wireless adapter

I am connecting to the Internet on a desktop Mac with a D-Link USB Wireless adapter, but then my computer is not visible and cannot see other computers on the local network. If I connect through built-in ethernet, sharing works fine. Any thoughts on how I could solve the wireless problem? I would prefer not to use ethernet since the router is all the way across the house.

Diagnostics can only run on built-in Wi-Fi and is unable to analyze the USB adapter's connection; the "Wi-Fi" option is greyed out.

## Edit ##

The USB wi-fi adapter runs its own Wi-Fi Network Utility application to connect to the local network and does not use the MacOS Wi-Fi connection utility. I do not have bluetooth enabled.
