Clock app, no alarm bug (iPhone 6; iOS 8 to 8.3)

Does anyone else have this problem? This bug has been plaguing random iPhones since iPhone 4 or maybe earlier.

Bug:

  • Set an alarm or a timer in the clock app
  • Alarm/timer either
    1. goes off and shows the visual alert on the screen, but makes no sound. In some cases it may or may not vibrate.
    2. does not go off at all, or goes off for half a second then stops. Either way the alarm turns itself off.
    3. goes off normally.
  • I get behaviours 2 and 3 for alarms, and all three behaviours for timers. Getting behaviour 3 is not often though.
  • The bug is unpredictable and I am unable to reproduce it. When I try to reproduce it, the alarms and timers go off normally. When I need to actually use the functions, they bug out.
  • My ringer, speaker, volume, vibration, are perfectly fine and properly configured.

Attempts to fix bug that did not work:

  • Delete all alarms and remake them.
  • Delete all alarms and make new ones every time an alarm is needed. Do not reuse alarms using the switches.
  • Close every other app and keep the Clock app the only one running in the app switcher.
  • Close every other app and keep the Clock app on the screen and have auto lock off.
  • Reset firmware to factory settings via Reset in the Settings app.
  • Restore firmware to latest via iTunes.

Questions:

  • Has anyone else encountered this bug on an iPhone 6? I know it's been around before, but even on the latest device?
  • Would I be able to get a free exchange from an Apple Store, given that this bug is not reproducible? I bought this device 8 months ago.

Ironic that this was first reported the day the Apple Watch was released.

Im willing to bet the watch alarm works ok and if the iPhone doesn't, that would drive people to another timekeeping device.

It's a shame. The alarm is a very important feature.

Um, this thread started on 16 May 2015. The Apple watch was release on 24 April 2015. The OP states they have had the problem for quite some time.

For most people, the alarm on the iPhone works just fine. However, there are people who have reported this same symptom (there are probably multiple causes) since well before the Apple Watch was even announced. I can't find a huge number of threads but here's one example:

iPhone 5 alarm not working

So, your conspiracy theory, while amusing doesn't seem to have much basis in fact.

This bug isn't rare, there are quite a few threads about it... I have the same issues, it happens randomly. I haven't found any triggers to cause it. I also have an additional scenario-The alarm will go off just fine, but after hitting "snooze" on the main screen I don't have any sound. Hours later I wake up to find the lock screen is on, displaying the snooze alarm is going off and there is no sound. Both this and the regular alarm not having sound is an issue that happens once in awhile with no identifyable triggers, it just happens and as you all know that have experienced it, it is really frustrating with potentially dire effects from being late for work.

Dear Apple, we won't be able to afford new phones or computers if we get fired from our jobs for being late or miss promotions because management thinks we're making up lame excuses that the alarm app isn't working properly too many times.

You're not addressing apple here. Use the feedback link:

And, yes, it is comparatively rare. "Quite a few threads" versus the many millions of iPhones sold is still rare. It's also quite possibly the symptom of more than one problem. Because it is, yes, rare and could be caused by more than one thing, it's probably going to be something that isn't necessarily going to be fixed by an update. Until it's resolved, you may want to consider buying an inexpensive alarm clock.

Thank you for the suggestions. I know how many iPhones there are in the world, I waited 7.5 hours on opening day for the first version. I am also well aware of how to send feedback to Apple, that part of my post was intended to be a lighthearted way to let people know that they aren't alone in their frustrations from the perceptions of peers and management at work. I am a former Apple employee and occasional usability tester. Overall, I'm just trying to give the people with this "rare" issue some reassurance that they aren't alone, not looking for my similar situation to be scrutinized. *sigh* I never post in forums for this very reason... I'm not trying to be a troll but not every post requires a suggestion for a solution in response, some are just to show support of having a similar issue. Now I feel the need to explain why I choose not to use any of the several alarm clocks in our home. I don't like them, they are all too bright and I'm sensitive to light that it affects my sleep and cortisol levels. I can't wear a night mask to block the light because my skin is also sensitive and causes me to break out with rashes and acne across my forehead after one night from my skin not being able to breathe, this includes masks made of natural fibers. I have a drawer full. I'll continue to risk it with my iPhone.

It's a technical support forum. If you post, the assumption is that you want to either receive or give such support.

What kind alarm clocks you do or don't use, your skin conditions or, especially, your hormone levels are not technical support issues.

I have had the same intermittent alarm issue on my iphone 6+ where the alarm only rings once and then displays the alert screen. I never saw this issue on my iphone 4. I was able to show the issue at an Apple store. The Apple store replaced my phone and told me if the problem occurs on the new phone to report the issue to Apple. On my new phone the alarm worked for several days and then the issue occurred again. I do not rely on the iphone alarm to wakeup anymore but I do set the alarm to see how often the alarm works and how often the alarm fails. My two daughters have an iphone 6 and have not seen the issue and they use the alarm daily. I am running IOS 8.4 and my daughters are running IOS 8.1.

This has recently started happening with my iPhone 6 . I have never had an issue with my alarm on this phone previously nor my former iPhone 4s. I set my alarm and if I happen to be in a light sleep, I will hear it ring once then it shuts off. I look at the display and it has self-selected snooze. I have tried various methods mentioned on multiple sites about this problem. I have change the sound, reset my phone, etc. It has not corrected this problem. I also have IOS 8.4 so perhaps this is the issue. The worst thing is I tried setting my iPad as a back-up today and both of them failed!! I will have to return to the old fashioned alarm clock as I cannot be late for my job. Weird that Apple doesn't have a fix for this as you can find threads all over the web citing this problem.

I see that IOS 8.4.1 was released. The release notes did not mention any alarm changes. I updated my iphone 6+ with IOS 8.4.1 and ran a quick test of the alarm and it worked, although the alarm had worked this morning before installing IOS 8.4.1, but not yesterday morning. I test the alarm every morning but I don't rely on the alarm app anymore. It is interesting that if you search for alarm issues on an Android phone you will find the same issues. I have always seen the alarm app ring at least once, but you cannot rely on the alarm always ringing more than once. I don't hold out much hope for a fix.

Now my alarm on both my iPhone 6 and iPad Air are working again. Not sure why but am happy they are fixed. Hope it lasts. Not sure if it had anything to do with the most recent IOS update but it did coincide with it. I read the details about the upgrade and it only seemed to be a fix for Apple Music. Nothing was mentioned about fixing a bug for the alarm.

This morning, both my alarm and my wife's failed to sound. iPhone 6, IOS 8.4.1. Both our alarms are set to sound every weekday. My phone was in a charging dock. I think hers was too.

Her alarm glitched the other day where it sounded for half a second then went silent. Mine has always behaved.

Two phones suffering at once is too much of a coincidence. Must be some common cause.
