Cursor freezes, Screen spontaneously jumps to tile view

I've been working on this problem for a couple months. I've cleaned caches, virus and malware checks, removed 25GB from HD, and upgraded from 2GB to 4GB RAM. Yet the 2 problems persist.

The cursor freezes from few seconds to 30 seconds. Initially I thought it was related to device. But happens both with trackball and Mac Mouse. Have connected it to different USB ports. At times it seems to be related to the cord, ie if cord not straight, but at other times, no relationship.

The spontaneous jump to tiled view seems to always occur when cursor is having problems, but not each time. I have to click on a window to bring it back to the screen view, or can click the tile key.

Try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read.

Etrecheck – System Information

Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

Here's the report. I've put the items which were in red on my in bold. I notice that AVG net shield is listed. I've eliminated this several times, yet it' still here...could this be a problem?

I see that my BU disk is too small. Do you know, does that mean I have to buy a new one? 500GB Seagate...or can I get an add-on for this unit? Will now continue w/ setting up new account.

I reset as you said. And logged in w/ new account, actually an old one I'd set up as a test some time ago. But I can't do anything once I'm in the new account. So I don't see how I can tell what's going on. The problem is intermittent, although just now, after the reset, it seems if anything, to be worse, that is, it started immediately after I opened these pages. Although as I continue posting this, no problem. The issue is always intermittent: can be fine for hours, then glitchy. 😕

Hi Eric. I've just remembered something. I started this problem-solving on the Logitech forum, as I use their Trackman. What was rather hilarious is that from my search, I ended up on a page that was me asking the same question 2 years earlier!. I don't think the resizing windows happened at that time, but the cursor freezing was. I ended up buying a new device. And yet only a few weeks earlier I'd come across an old Trackman, had no recall why I'd need to replace it, and it seemed fine when I plugged it in. So some part of this problem seems to precede Maverick.

My one theory is that the problem is in the cord. I sit w/ a pillow on my lap, the device on the pillow, the keyboard on a pull-out shelfe at level of the pillow. I wonder if the cord has become brittle enough that it needs to be at a very specific angle in order to be reliable. I'm far more careful now, whereas I used to tilt it in the left hand, and operate w/ right. I didn't think to ask this question when I was trouble-shooting w/ Logitech. cheers, ahmo
