Why when I have entered the e-mail passwords into ( Internet accounts in System prefs ) do I get repeated requests to reenter passwords in a drop down box and mail does not work. working fine from iPhone but not Mac

Mac book pro 2009 on Mavericks. Why when I have entered the e-mail passwords into ( Internet accounts in System prefs ) do I get repeated requests to reenter passwords in a drop down box and mail does not work. working fine from iPhone but not Mac. My mail was hacked and messages sent some weeks ago and I changed the passwords. I am worried that this drop down request is a con? Also mail often shows receiving many messages in progress but nothing shows up in inbox!!! Please help!!! Thanks

Try deleting the password from Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access. While there, Keychain Access menu/First Aid.

When you changed the password, did you go to Mail/Preferences/Accounts and change it there?

What does Mail/Window/Connection Doctor Show? If the server is red, select it and look at the Show Details box.

Try re-indexing the mailboxes. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

Thank you for spending the time to offer what I'm sure was good advice. Sadly I am not computer literate enough to be able to resolve my problems. Sorry for not thanking you earlier for your kind suggestions. Most Mac users say that you cannot be hacked and they are super secure. My e-mail only ever opened from mac devices at home or mobile personal hotspot has been hacked 3 times now! Immediate password change limited damage but what a Nightmare.
