Can I use a thunderbolt for a second monitor?

hi

I have a late 2012 Mac Mini running the latest OS and currently have one monitor connected to the HDMI port, can I use the thunderbolt port to connect a second monitor?

I haven't set up a second monitor on a Mac before and would like to extend the desktop on the second monitor.

Would I use the system preferences to set up the primary and secondary monitor? Because I'd be buying a newer monitor with higher resolution it would make sense to have the new one as the primary monitor and my current one as the extended desktop

thanks

nick

I use extended displays

You will need a suitable adopter unless you purchase Apple's $999 Thunderbolt monitor.

A Thunderbolt port accepts a mini displayport plug for video/audio. You can get a min displayport to:

VGA

DVI

HDMI

adopter.

Best is to get a monitor with a mini displayport/displayport input and just use a suitable cable
