Maybe this worked fine when you first posted this, but I just tried to download it, and it wouldn't open for me. I have Yosemite running on my MacBook Pro. The message popped up when I tried to open it: "GIMP can't be opened because the identity of the developer cannot be confirmed. Your security preferences allow installation of only apps from the Mac App store and identified developers." Unless there's some way to change the security preferences to allow this, I can't use this version of GIMP.

EDIT: Nevermind... turns out there IS a way to bypass that: OS X Yosemite: Open an app from an unidentified developer

Not true anymore. If you follow that link it takes you to Sourceforge. (Their first download option is to a Torrent site, thank you but no thanks.) The lisanet link goes to somewhere else, which THEN goes to Sourceforge. I recently battled to get rid of some crapware called Advanced MacCleaner which I accidentally got from downloading Filezilla at Sourceforge. It took me a great deal of effort to get rid of it.

I don't know why Gimp doesn't just allow you to download it off their site directly?!

I'm going to look at alternatives like Pixlr ...

Hi,

Thank you for your comment, when I tried I noticed what was happening and closed down before it could go any further. GIMP is a wonderful program, however, it is a risk I am not prepared to take. I use to use Apache Open Office which I liked very much and it seems to come from the same source. If you do find a better and safe solution, please let me know.

Thank you again

Hi Rachel,

I went to Pixlr and was pleasantly surprised. It has all the functionality you are likely going to need for basic photo editing AND best of all, you don't even have to download anything! You can work right off their online editor, very very cool. There is a fantastic 1+ hour long tutorial on Youtube that covers how to use it.

Everyone should boycott Sourceforge, they are doing us all a great disservice. I had to go to great lengths to get that crapware AdvancedMacCleaner removed from my desktop. And I have a business to run and simply don't have that time so I feel like I was ripped off.

Best,

I have been downloading and installing GIMP from lisanet for years without any issues. Sourceforge just happens to be a site that Simone stores her content on, and it is not a Torrent site (or I would not use it either). The highest probability for one getting unplanned crapware into their Mac is inadvertently clicking on some web advertising site, or a related pop-up, or using one of the non-SourceForge download aggregator sites (again I never use these).

I prefer to keep all of my graphical work local on my machine, and do not place stock in remote, cloud-based solutions for graphical design, or storage content. In addition to GIMP, I also have Affinity Designer, and Affinity Photo — both in the OS X App Store, and they share the same document format for hopping between each application. Affinity Designer has a trial available from their site. I have no financial interest in Affinity.

GIMP's download setup is a bit odd. Their direct, main download page is here.

Note that their biggest link is a torrent download. That doesn't mean it's illegal somehow or automatically untrustworthy, that's just the one they make the biggest target.

But notice under that, it states:

If the torrent download doesn't work, you can also follow this link.

The words "this link" directly downloads a standard Mac .dmg installer. That's the one I would use. If for no other reason it doesn't require having torrent software to download it. Not sure why that isn't their main method to start with.

Hi VikingOSX

I did try lisanet to download GIMP but had an issue opening GIMP, when I did I had problems. After having had a nasty shock when, like you say, by accident clicked on one of those links, I had a terrible time getting rid of it, hence, it made me nervous using that site or any other site. I definitely will give it further thought, thanks for your advice.

Hi again,

Actually, I am looking at YouTube tutorial right now, as soon as I finish looking I will go online to try it out. If I succeed I will let you know. I know what you mean about the little nasties we accidentally click on, they are beasties to get rid of. I am surprised that SourceForge allows these sort of people to places these links on their site.

Thanks again
