why do I get two separate lots of messages from the same contact. .?

maybe if the contact first was sending normal sms and then got an iphone or activated iMessage then what you describe would happen
Do you mean you think the sim is being used in two phones?
Are you receiving the same text message at different times or are you receiving different text messages from the same sender separately?
Yes. I'll receive usual messages from my contact then all of a sudden a new contact same name, details everything another set of texts. It's weird as the conversation can skip from one to the other. I've seen his phone and he's only using one phone as I can see all messages together on his screen. However it often comes through as two senders. Very confusing
I have multiple sets of messages for the same people. For example, I have my wife that I text with all the time, as an individual recipient, and I have my wife and our daughter, as multiple recipients, on another set of texts. We used that one for a family thing, and now every now and then, my wife won't be paying attention and will use that one, by accident, and will text my daughter and I. Your contact may be doing that also.
