Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Does anyone else HATE the new Photos "upgrade"?

Photos has made a huge MESS of my pictures & I literally want to scream. It changed the dates on a lot of my pictures and now I can't even find the new ones after I upload them. I don't have time to sit at my computer and work out Apples bugs. ARRGHHHH!!!!! Anyone have a good non-Apple program that they have switched to? I am SO ready...

MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.53 GHz), iOS 8.3

Drag and drop problems. I found 2 responses from TD regarding Events saying they "are all automated".

"Events are organisation for those who don't want to think about it. They are automatic - based entirely on Date and Time the camera records the photos as taken.

You can move photos between Events, you can Merge Events, you can Rename them and sort them in various ways except one: You cannot manually sort in an Event as Events are all automated.

If you want to manually sort in an Event then you've outgrown Events as an organising tool. Now it's time to look at albums (Where you can manually sort) which are much more flexible than Events as an organising tool."

Does this mean you can only use "Merge Events", you can't drag and drop?

Here's another;

"You can't do a Manual sort in the Library, in either Events or Photos view now.

Make Albums. You can sort in those any way you want."

Notice the "now" meaning v9. In other words, you can't just Sort as implied by the Sort menu. You need to use the feature called "make an Album and then Sort".

Searching around, I found this user posting this question: "I'm trying to figure out the sorting options on Plex for iPhoto events. No matter what I do, I can't get it to display the pictures in their correct sort order, which should be by date."

Oh dear. how come you don't correct yourself. After all this

In v9, you can't turn "Event Titles" off.

remains untrue.

Regarding "drag and drop" of Events and/or photos

Everything I said was true. Remember, this:

Worse, you couldn't drag and drop Events; or photos into Events.

is what you wrote. Both of these statements are untrue. Turns out you don't seem to mean dragging and dropping either Photos or Events. Turns out you mean manually sorting within Event. Who could have guessed that?

I am hopelessly confused about why the Library system is needed at all. Why not just put photos in a folder? I have Photoshop and use Photoshop Bridge, which I have enough trouble finding photos in. I have no use for the old photos library, let alone this separate level of confusion with terrible documentation. Apparently with Apple I am obliged to make duplicates of everything and then cannot remember where anything is because there is no usable system for locating them. The whole thing is so complicated I'd dump the whole thing, but Apple makes this absolutely impossible. The whole system is a ghastly mess of bloatware and I'd even consider using Windows via Parallels, except I suspect Windows is at least as big a mess. Why do Apple computers have to be so **** complicated? I don't have time for this.

Wow - as the foremost authority on everything I would think you would understand databases and their power

But in any case you statement that it is impossible not to use Photos (or iPhotos or any other software for that matter) - total balderbash - nothing is forced on you and it is trivial to use any other software including the finder alone for organizing you photos

So if you are confused and want help then start a new thread with specific details on your system and software and workflow and people here will help - trash talk like you just posted services no purpose and givse no one any clues as to how to help your inability to understand how the software works (tens of million sod understand and use it daily )

If you don't want photos stored in the Library, use the Referenced Library with either iPhoto or Photos. In Photos preferences, general tab, uncheck Copy items to Photos Library.

Exactly who is forcing you to use Photos or iPhotos? Use whatever photo program you want. You want to save your files in folders, then create folders and save your pictures there. If you don't want to learn how to use a program, then don't use it.

If you are unhappy with Apple computers, google PCs for sale. They are available in just about every electronics store around.

This is absolutely ridiculous. Photos has changed the dates of many of my photos which has completely messed up the chronological order of the photos. How do I quickly and simply put all my April photos into an album called April 2015, and all the photos I took in England into chronological order and into an album called England? I've already wasted more time trying to figure this out than I can afford.

There is no way to do what you want at the present time. Tell Apple what missing features you'd like restored/added in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html

In the meantime here's something that might help:

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there was a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder. To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N. Name it as desired. It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

The downside to the simulation is that the Albums/Events can only be sorted automatically by Title. But they can also be sorted manually, either in the sidebar or in the folder's window at the right.

Ask Apple for more sorting options in Photos via https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html.

Photos 1.0 for OS 10.10.3 *****

Photos 1.0 for OS 10.10.3 Must have been created by Arrogant Adolescents who could not imagine that anyone would need more than facial recognition to organize their “Selfies”

GONE are the view / sort by /menu options that were so helpful in changing the order of photos to newest at top, oldest at the top, sort by star rating ( able to temporarily eliminate all photos below 3 stars), keywords, & CRITICALLY MANUAL SORT

GONE is the 1 to 5 star rating tool that was so helpful to quality sort large numbers of photos in each iPhone import before creating an album of the best photos to send to iMovie.

NEW EDIT / ADJUST TOOL now offers only 2 crude tools; brightness, & saturation.

GONE ARE the professional adjustments for: LEVELS, CONTRAST, (avoid saturating skin tones), DEFINITION, HIGHLIGHTS, SHADOWS, SHARPNESS, DE NOISE.

NEW EDIT / FILTERS TOOL now offers only 9 crude tints; GONE are WARMER, COOLER, SEPIA, ANTIQUE, MATTE & VIGNETTE, EDGE BLUR, FADE

EDIT / CROP / ASPECT always reverts to “freeform” if you click the Done button & select a new photo to edit. & what does the Auto button do?

GONE is the EVENTS splitting tool that was so useful to separate & keyword imports form an iPhone.

Photos selected in “All Photos” cannot be dragged to another album or event.

Photos 1.0 is now only useful for amateur photographers who save every photo they take regardless of quality.

Look more closely at the "Adjust" panel. There is a faint blue "Add" button in the upper right corner. "DEFINITION, HIGHLIGHTS, SHADOWS, SHARPNESS, DE NOISE" are there, when you add them. And most Adjustments have disclosure arrows to add more control.

The vignette is also there.

Photos is just the first version of a completely new application, built solely for Yosemite without porting legacy code for more efficiency. It will take time to develop it further as a full image database system. That is probably the reason, why Apple continues the support for iPhoto in Yosemite. Photos 2, to be released this fall, will have more features, as promised in this preview: Apple — OS X El Capitan

And it may help to show the scroll bar, so you can see which panels have more items than shown.
