Photos app (mac, OS X) not importing photos from iPhone

I got it working by only importing small chunks at a time by selecting the photos and press "import selected" I was able to get about 500 photos sometimes, however, sometimes had to do less than 100 at a time (I think it might have related to the number of videos or size of photos). Had over 3000 photos. Spent several days trying to download my photos as I had run out of space on my phone. Even spent $25 on a new Apple lightning cable thinking it might be the cable. As others have said, it seems that "Photos" cannot handle large amounts of data. I find it odd that Apple can't create software that would figure this out and download in small chunks on its own rather than having to spend hours doing this on my own.

I had very similar problem. Photos opened, Connected iPhone 6 with Lightning cable to Macbook Pro 13" Mid 2010. Loads some thumbnails quickly but others never load, (select yes/no to delete after completion) and click on the Import button (I have tried with selection or all the new photos), then the progress bar never moves, keeps saying the total number of photos to be imported and never changes, Activity monitor does not recognize any special load related to import activity.... that can take for minutes to hours and nothing changes. Tried multiple times... but nothing...

But finally I found the solution, the cable!!!! I just replaced the lightning cable with another one.... and Voilá! worked again. All thumbnails load instantly, and also every combination of import works again.

By the way, the cable was already over lasted showing wear near the iPhone plug.... But charging was working fine.
