FCP 10.2.1 Can't relink external proxies

Hi guys,

I’m actually trying to setup a postproduction workflow between me and my director on a documentary we’re working on. We mostly shoot Epic 4k, and importing raw red files directly into FCPX.

I need to share fcpx library with my director who lives 50kms away, but as he doesn’t need raw files or 4k, I only need to feed him with proxy files.

My first attempt was to keep sources external to library, render proxies, and transfer library with proxies inside to the director. All items were offline when opening library but as soon as he switched to proxy mode, everything went back, so he could edit, send an xml and edit was automatically pointing back to red files at my place.

It was a good and working solution but I wanted all generated media to be external so I can easily synchronize contents between the 2 places, by copying only what’s new, and I also wanted the library to be empty of media for easy exchange over internet, without dealing with xml.

So now I have a “master” folder containing the 3 managed folders : FCPX BACKUP, MEDIA & CACHE. My library is now media empty, what is cool.

I’ve fed the director with the library and the whole media file structure, except the Original Media folder that is empty.

When he opens library, fcpx understands that previous media file structure isn’t available and asks for pointing to 3 new locations.

When relinking correctly those 3 folders, proxies are desperately offline, and seek for old file path (mine) instead of being updated to the new location.

Question is simple : how can I force relink those **** proxies ? Where did it go wrong ? Am I missing something ? Is it a bug ??

Thanks for any kinda help!

David

I am afraid there is no sanctioned way to "relink proxies".

The approved method for what you are trying to achieve involves doing the move in FCP X to begin with.

1) With the library selected in the browser, open the Inspector and click Modify settings. Adjust the locations of the media as necessary.

2) Click "Consolidate" to let FCP X put everything where it should.

At this point, if you still have the original library, with media inside, I suggest you do as above and send a new drive to the director.

Otherwise, you may need to carefully bring the proxies back into the library, make sure everything works, and then do 1) and 2) above.

Thanks for your answer Luis! Actually I did the consolidate to move everything out of the library to those managed folders.

On my machine everything is ok and every file is accessible. When library is copied onto another machine, and managed folders repointed correctly, proxies stay offline, despite it should be ok in my understanding. Maybe the sources files are needed to allow proxies path to be updated, or maybe it is a bug.

As stated in fcpx documentation, it should behave the same way as when media lie within the library, but it's not...

You mean:

- you sent the library, your director has a different HD with the same structure (but possibly a different name)

- he/she clicks on modify settings, and chooses the appropriate location

- proxies are still offline

Does this correctly describe the situation?

You may need to realize that "modify settings" applies to the future, i.e. it implies that future imports or transcodes target the designated folders.

If the above is correct, it may be worth trying a consolidate - even though everything is where you expect it to be, it may not be where FCP X expects it to be.

Luis,

At my place, I had external sources (where they were lying), and made proxies of those, that went inside the library.

I then made a consolidate to external managed folder. FCP did move all proxies to this new place, as well as copying sources that were external.

At that point, everything is fine.

I then did a copy of both library and external managed folder to external drive, where every bit of file is here, except subfolder containing raw sources I don't (and can't) copy because it's now more than 4TB.

I gave the hard drive to my director, who copied again library and managed folder structure on his system.

FCP asked for a new place for the managed folder because he couldn't find mine, and when showing where is now this managed folder, proxies are desperately offline.

At first, before going to external managers folder, I simply gave the only library stuffed with proxies to my director, and it worked so well and so easy...

My director told me that offline proxies were still pointing to MY file path instead of his file path, despite the relocation of managed folder path.

I'm now wondering if sources are not mandatory for fcp to update proxies file path...

It appears so.

I think that the only way to go now may be to set everything with matching paths and names, i.e., have your drive and your director's drive have exactly the same name, and place the files in exactly the same path.

I believe that if enough people fill in the feedback form and ask for separate locations for original, optimized and proxy media, plus relinking proxy only, Apple may eventually implement that.

Had the same problem on an indy film currently in post. Been working on it all morning and it seems that mimicking the drive name and structure exactly on any and all drives in use is the only way to fix this issue. Which is a ridiculous workaround to an issue that should be three mouse clicks to fix. Annoying.

But thank you Luis, saved us from pulling our hair out, or abandoning FCPX against the directors wishes.
