FCP 10.2.1 Can't relink external proxies

1 - go to library file

2 - right click - show package contents

3 - go to proxy folder

4 - replace the proxy file from files you want to relink ( just copy and paste ) - click to replace all file

5 - they will automatically relink proxy file when copying is done

I am afraid there is no sanctioned way to "relink proxies".

The approved method for what you are trying to achieve involves doing the move in FCP X to begin with.

1) With the library selected in the browser, open the Inspector and click Modify settings. Adjust the locations of the media as necessary.

2) Click "Consolidate" to let FCP X put everything where it should.

At this point, if you still have the original library, with media inside, I suggest you do as above and send a new drive to the director.

Otherwise, you may need to carefully bring the proxies back into the library, make sure everything works, and then do 1) and 2) above.

Do the folders and the media have managing file paths?

You mean:

- you sent the library, your director has a different HD with the same structure (but possibly a different name)

- he/she clicks on modify settings, and chooses the appropriate location

- proxies are still offline

Does this correctly describe the situation?

You may need to realize that "modify settings" applies to the future, i.e. it implies that future imports or transcodes target the designated folders.

If the above is correct, it may be worth trying a consolidate - even though everything is where you expect it to be, it may not be where FCP X expects it to be.

It appears so.

I think that the only way to go now may be to set everything with matching paths and names, i.e., have your drive and your director's drive have exactly the same name, and place the files in exactly the same path.

I believe that if enough people fill in the feedback form and ask for separate locations for original, optimized and proxy media, plus relinking proxy only, Apple may eventually implement that.

Had the same problem on an indy film currently in post. Been working on it all morning and it seems that mimicking the drive name and structure exactly on any and all drives in use is the only way to fix this issue. Which is a ridiculous workaround to an issue that should be three mouse clicks to fix. Annoying.

But thank you Luis, saved us from pulling our hair out, or abandoning FCPX against the directors wishes.

IF you have the master files and the proxies externally the master files will relink but the proxies won't. The way to relink them is to tell the application the proxies already exist. Select the clips to and use transcode media. Select proxy and the files will immediately relink because the proxies are already there.

Tom, what you suggested worked for me, except that when I clicked Create Proxy the indicator showed progress from 0% to 100% in 1% increments, but faster than when previously creating the proxies. So it was a little slower than immediately relinking.

Check to see if you have duplicate proxies. That shouldn't happen if the files have the correct names. if you do have duplicates you can easily dupe the old ones. In the Finder sort the column order based on date created.

There are no duplicate proxies.

How many proxy files are you talking about, thousands?
