If you make a backup of the device, you will lose nothing. You backup the device either with iCloud or iTunes, make sure your information is also imported and synced as well to protect it. Then you update.
If you choose to backup in iTunes, make sure you enable the Encrypted option. Otherwise, not all sensitive information will be included in the backup.
You should not lose any information when updating.
However its always a good idea to backup your device before updating, in case the unthinkable happens.
