how do I back up damaged iPad when itunes asks for device passcode?

If iTunes is asking for the passcode and you can't enter it, there is nothing that yo can do. If the screen is in a condition such that you cannot use the iPad, and if you haven't backed up yet, you are unfortunately out of luck,
Hi Since ios 7 your iPad should back up Automatically when put on Charge it backs up over your WiFi to iCloud When you get a replacement just use the same Apple ID Then you may get Apps /Data back . Cheers Brian

This is wonderful information if the poster had configured their device to do this. However, if you do not configure the device to sync over Wi-Fi and iCloud, no matter how many times you plug it in, it isn't going to backup automatically. Make sure you qualify your statements when you make them.
I do not use iCloud for backups, I use iTunes. I plug my iPhone and iPad in daily, and they have never backed up automatically to iCloud. It all has to do with configuration.
