Is it possible to DELETE Safari?

I've been hit by CinemaPro, and got rid of it thanks to someone's post. However, it's also hit me with the phishing 'hey you need to call this number to fix a problem' garbage and I just tried to put Safari in the trash. I can't. I get an error message: "Safari" can't be modified or deleted because it's required by OS X.

Is this true, or have I been hacked? Or Charter, since it seems to know I'm on Charter.

I'm using OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 . I'm so disgusted with Safari I want to completely remove it, I may not ever put it back. Thankfully it's not my primary web browser.

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), Safari

OS X says that about any app it installs, including incredibly necessary apps like Chess. If you want to get rid of it, you can.

Highlight Safari and press Command+I. Click the lock at the lower right of the Get Info dialogue box and enter your admin password. Under Permissions, add yourself as an owner. Change all headings listed to Read&Write. Close the Get Info box.

You should now be able to delete Safari without interference from the OS.

Safari should not be deleted because it offers background services to other apps and the operating system.

You have not been hacked and you do not have a virus. You do have malware/adware that needs to be cleared out using AdwareMedic removes all known adware from your Mac. Download and instructions here.

Sorry, but in what way does Safari do anything you mention in your first sentence? It's just another browser.

The only other app it could possibly provide a background "service" to is Java, if you have that installed. But Java will operate just the same in Chrome, Firefox or Opera whether Safari is on the drive or not.

The OS couldn't care less if Safari is there or not.

You don't need to delete anything or download anything. There are several ways to recover.

1. Some of those scam pages can be dismissed very easily. Press the key combination command-W to close the tab or window. A huge box will pop up. Press the return key and both the box and the page will close. If that doesn't happen, continue.

2. Press and hold command-W. You may hear repeating alert sounds. While holding the keys, click the OK button in the popup. A different popup may appear, which you can cancel out of as usual.

3. From the Safari menu bar, select

Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security

and uncheck the box marked Enable JavaScript. Leave the preferences dialog open.

Close the malicious window or tab.

Re-enable JavaScript and close the preferences dialog.

4. If the Preferences menu item is grayed out, quit Safari. Force quit if necessary. Relaunch it by holding down the shift key and clicking its icon in the Dock. None of the windows and tabs will reopen.

After closing the malicious page, from the menu bar, select

Safari Preferences... Privacy Remove All Website Data

to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.

That message is a scam, and it can easily show up in any browser. The same is true of the CinemaPro adware you had installed. Using Chrome or Firefox is no protection against these things. In fact, there are far more adware browser extensions available for Chrome than for any other browser, and some adware is known to actually modify the Firefox app itself (but not other browsers). Changing browsers won't protect you.

I don't recommend deleting Safari. There's no much point in doing so. Some future update will just put it back, and if you should ever have a problem with whatever other browser you're using, you'll have no alternative browser to use. If you choose not to use Safari, so be it, but there's no reason to delete it.

Very true (and I was coming back to kind of add the same thing). Getting rid of Safari won't solve the issue anyway. These types of pop-ups will do the same thing in any browser by causing the same JavaScript loop. The fix, more than anything else, is for badgeretteTimbuctu to change his/her browsing habits by avoiding the types of web sites he/she seems to gravitate towards.
