Can I contribute a small collection of facts to this rather subjective thread. My data is only for Photoshop CS2, not CS2 suite (therefore partial) and my MBP is a lowly 1.83 CD. Nevertheless, I hope it will help to provide a factual basis from which more informed judgements can be made.
I am a pro photographer with three Macs, two of which are Intel and which replaced older macs recently. I use the retouchartists.com speed test to measure my Photoshop performance in any new system or after system changes.
MBP CD 1.83 2 Gb RAM: (Rosetta) 5 min 30 secs
MBP ditto XP in Parallels: 16 mins (dont bother)
G5 2x2 4.5 Gb RAM: 2 mins 15 secs
Mac Pro 5 Gb RAM (Rosetta): 2 mins 8 secs
Mac Pro XP in Bootcamp: 2 mins 56 secs (2gb RAM limit throttled?)
Mac Pro XP in Parallels: 4 mins 30 secs
G4 2x867 1.75 Gb RAM: 4 mins
G4 Titanium Powerbook 550 Mhz 1 Gb RAM: 16+ mins.
The last is really for historical interest, but does indicate what someone upgrading from a five year old Powerbook might expect. I have included desktop data in this laptop thread, because it will help people judge what they may get with laptops, by comparison with their desktop experience.
All with 10.4.8 which boosted Rosetta speeds.
It all depends on your perspective. When I am editting 1000 wedding photos I want every bit of speed, and can't wait for CS3. When I am on the road or holiday, editting a handful of pictures my 1.83 CD MBP flies along.

PS The Retouchartists speed test can be downloaded from here:

I used 20 history states for all tests.
