Access time machine backup from another MAC

Hi all,

I have several MAC all using time machine to be backed up on a time capsule.

My new Macbook air does not boot anymore and is currently in repair at Apple for about 10-15 days.

In the mean time I'd like to get access to some files from the backup of my macbook Air from my other Macbook.

How can I access files that have been backed up from another MAC ?

It is obvious that I do not want to restore the full backup now I do not want to erase the disk of my Macbook.

Thanks !

Hold down the option key and select

Browse Other Backup Disks...

from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar. The menu icon looks like a clock running backwards. If you don't have that menu, open the Time Machine preference pane and check the box marked

Show Time Machine in menu bar

Hi Linc,

I found how to access it.

1/ Hold down the option key and selectBrowse Other Backup Disks...

2/ Select the backup you want to access (in my case MacbookAir backups) on the list

3/ time machine laugh Finder with multiple windows with all backups dates.

4/ DO NOT SELECT the time capsule drive within the shared device list

5/ but double click on backup Time Machine (next to the Macintosh HD in the device list)

6/ go the the latest backup date folder and manually search the file to recover

IT works

Thanks Linc for your time, really appreciated.

Hi Linc,

Thanks for your tip, however it looks to me that this procedure is to open another archive file for the same user or MAC.

When I open this Other Backup disk from another MAC and another user I do not see the folder tree from my MAC out of service but only my folder home tree.

In my case I have a backup of MacbookAir1 with User1 that I try to open from Macbook2 User2 and this does not seems to work.

Any other idea ?

So What I did.

Option A

1/ Hold down the option key and selectBrowse Other Backup Disks...

2/ Select MacbookAir backups on the list

3/ time machine laugh Finder with multiple windows with all backups dates.

4/ when I select the TimeCapsule drive I'm unable to see MacBookAir.sparsebundle file. and therefore I'm unable to double click on it to open the backup

Option B

If I use finder to get to MacBookAir.sparsebundle without going first via time machine then I see the MacBookAir.sparsebundle file but I can not enter it with a double click

I thought that you asked me to do option A however I tried B as well.

Yes the drive is mounted.

MacBook-Air-de-Claude:~ claude$ mount

....

/dev/disk3s2 on /Volumes/Copies de sauvegarde Time Machine (hfs, local, nodev, nosuid, journaled, nobrowse)

/dev/disk2s2 on /Volumes/Copies de sauvegarde Time machine (hfs, local, nodev, nosuid, journaled, noowners, mounted by claude)

However when I double click on it nothing happen. If I right click on it and I select "Show Packet content" then I see

Bands (Folder)

Com.apple.timeMachine.MachineID.bckup

Com.apple.timeMachine.MachineID.plist

Com.apple.timeMachine.Results.plist

Com.apple.timeMachine.SnaphotHistory.plist

info.bckup

info.plist

Token

and if I go to Bands folder I do have some strange folders...

I should add double click on the macbook.sparsebundle file.

Here complete sequence tested and retested.

1/ Hold down the option key and selectBrowse Other Backup Disks...

2/ Select the backup you want to access (in my case MacbookAir backups) on the list and double click on the macbook.sparsebundle file

3/ time machine launche Finder with multiple windows with all backups dates.

4/ DO NOT SELECT the time capsule drive within the shared device list

5/ but double click on backup Time Machine (next to the Macintosh HD in the device list)

6/ go the the latest backup date folder and manually search the file to recover

7/ note that when you exit the Time Machine app the backup time machine is still mounted until you eject it.

I hope this helps
