What can I do if a retailer asked for the cards last four digits when using Apple Pay?

I was recently at a retailer trying to use Apple Pay to make a purchase. After going through the normal confirmation of payment, the retailer asked for the last four digits of the card. They explained that it is a store policy for all transactions over $50 to enter the last four digits. Since Apple Pay used a unique number for each transaction and the not the card number, the last four digits I gave them did not match. I believe this is an error in there system where they included Apple Pay transactions in the last four digits check. The cashier does not understand this. Who can I contact to help fix this? Does Apple need to provide training to these retailers?

If they ask for the last four digits of the card number, you need to give them the last four digits of the Device Account Number. The device account number is static as long as the card remains in Apple Pay. If you remove and re-add the card, a new device account number will be assigned.

There are two ways to get to this information:

  1. Settings (app) > Passbook & Apple Pay. Touch the card used for payment and look for the Device Account Number.
  2. Passbook (app). Select the card used for payment and touch the information icon (i in a circle).

I have a related question. I have an iPhone 5S and an Apple Watch--of course I can only use Apple Pay with the Watch itself.

Since the phone alone doesn't support Apple Pay, There is no Settings>Passbook & Apple Pay. You also cannot view the cards in the Passbook app.

The only place to view the cards is within the Apple Watch App>Passbook & Apple Pay. However, when I get to the section of each card that says "Device Account Number" all it shows is 3 dots because the screen is narrower than the 6/6+ . It does not expand when that section is pressed, therefore I can't see a way to see those numbers AT ALL.

Any ideas?
