Removing duplicate photos.

I recently noticed I have a ton of Photos Albums that contain duplicates. I do not think there are really two copies of the image in the Library file. I upgraded my old "Duplicate Annihilator for iPhoto" to their new version for Photos for Mac and it did report duplicates, but none that it tagged with "duplicate" were the ones I was seeing doubles of:

With the old iPhoto, I know you could take a photo and drag it to an Album, and also in to another Album so it appears in two places. I expect Photos for Mac does the same thing, and somewhere along the line photos got dragged twice.

Does anyone know a simple way to get rid of these?

MacBook, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), Late 2009 model.

Now, if you select 50 images and drag them to an album, then later you select the same 50 and drag them in, you now have TWO of each there. Those are the things I am trying to get rid of.

That should not happen. I can't duplicate that problem. Could be a corrupted database. The standard repair library is the only option available to us at this time.

Hosever, as a test launch Photos with the Option key held down and create a new, test library. Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

You are correct. It should not and DOES not happen. But, somehow a bunch of images got duplicated in the library with (as I have since learned) slightly different file sizes. I did not do this. I want to just blow them away and move on, but I don't want to have to do this through hundreds and hundreds of images manually. My theory is that somehow the Photo Stream images import with a different size, and later when I hook up the device via USB to import (and delete from device) the images, the second copies showed up. I have to import/delete to get them off the device. At least, I haven't figured out a way to delete them from Photos when connected via USB. Perhaps Photo Stream is the problem.

I need something like Duplicate Annihilator that actually works. It does not detect them as duplicates since the are different sizes (even customizing the search so it just looks at image dimensions, date, etc.). They just posted an update to fix some bugs, but it did not help. Perhaps it's still got some rough edges (mine tends to lock up and never complete during the final "Finishing" step so I know it's having problems).

Thank you for pointing me to these other two compare programs. Both look like they will do what I want (and I have no idea how I ended up with all these old duplicates.)

Amusingly ... It's clear we still have some improvement to be made before we can let these programs decide on their own (see attached image). 🙂 I should talk the GraphicConverter guy in to adding support. GC has a way tons can images based on how they look -- not just file size/name -- and it has been quite accurate (though depending on the level, it can flag "similar shots" rather than just duplicates).
