how to make a video or screenshot a video of an idvd or dvd menu?

Recently my father passed and using iDVD I created a short dvd that was played at the viewing. I've since received multiple requests from people wanting a copy. The DVD is basically a short slideshow and due to the volume of people requesting a copy, I've made it into a movie that I can email to those interested.

Here's my problem, or what I'm not finding a solution for:

I'm hoping there's a way to create a VIDEO of the dvd Menu, which I made in iDVD. Of course, this would not be interactive, but used as the first image or movie in the video I'm creating in iMovie as an introduction to what the video is. So far, I've not found a way of doing it through exporting. When trying to play the dvd and take a video screencapture, the resulting video shows only a checkerboard pattern.

Unsuccessful attempts I've made are using QuickTime & Snapz Pro X to capture, as well as playing the dvd using Apple's DVD player and trying VideoLan as some older posts suggested. Also as suggested, I tried ripping the dvd as a video using HandBrake, but this only results in the content being copied, not including the menu, which is what I'm looking for.

Any ideas of help would be appreciated.

Thanks

As for the video of the menu, open the VIDEO_TS folder on the disk and look for a file titled VIDEO_TS.VOB. That's the file that contains the menu. That should be the video of the menu. Movies and slideshows in the project will be those files with the .VOB extension. You'll need the 3rd party VLC app to play those files. To convert it to a move format that use can use use the open sourceHandbrake on that .VOB file. Copy the file from the video disk to the Desktop before playing or converting it. Just too slow on the disk.

Hey you Old Toad,

Thanks for getting back to me on this. Before reading your reply, I noticed some problems with my Snapz App, so I downloaded and reinstalled it again and was able to take care of it by playing the dvd in VLC & then use Snapz to capture it. Feel sort of foolish as what I specifically said I had tried and didn't work, worked.

Thanks much.
