how do I add/dial extensions to phone numbers on iphone?

When tapping a main number that has an extension number attached to it, the call "can't be completed as dialed." Is there a was to include the extension number?

Otherwise I have to stop and write down the whole number with extension and dial manually. (I know, I know, it's not a tragedy, but on the go it's often hard to find something to write on. And it's so un-Apple!)

Thanks in advance,

Joanna

Hello, joanna117.

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

I understand that you are unable to place a call using a contact that has an extension. I would need a little clarification on how the contact shows with the extension to provide a better answer. However, try deleting and recreating the contact via the steps below. Once this is done, test making the call. You may also want to test another similar contact as it could be an issue with this number.

Automate dialing an extension or passcode. If the number you’re calling requires dialing an extension, iPhone can enter it for you. When editing a contact’s phone number, tap User uploaded file to enter pauses in the dialing sequence. Tap Pause to enter a two-second pause, which is represented by a comma. Tap Wait to stop dialing until you tap Dial again, which is represented by a semicolon.
