Can you convert cdr to mp4?

I have copied an educational DVD to my iMac using the disk utility in order to create an mp4 file and play it in my class. The digital TV in the classroom has two USB ports and can read files but it does not have a DVD drive, so I cannot use the DVD. However, I can't open the document with the cdr extension on my iMac. Any suggestions?
