Using WD my cloud mirror with airport extreme to store pictures for my wireless network

Is it possible to plug a WD My Cloud Drive into the USB port on the Airport Time Capsule so I can store my pictures, videos and music there for my 3 macbook airs. I would like to use this as a wi-fi storage device for the family to use but obviously want something that would be reasonably fast.

Thanks

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3), null

You cannot use it by USB.. WD MyCloud is ethernet (network storage).. you would buy a much cheaper USB drive to plug into the TC.. my passport.. my book, I get confused between them all.. http://www.wdc.com/en/products/external/

As long as it is NOT network.. then it will be plugged in by USB.

USB drives will be slower however than a MyCloud plugged in by ethernet.. so I do think the MyCloud could be a better approach.

Remember too storage of Apple libraries on network drives.. has implications.. Apple still prefers you to use HFS+ format.. that is not possible on a network drive.. except.. (aint there always) you can create a virtual disk on the network drive and format it HFS+.. this is how TM works using My Cloud which is not formatted HFS+ but EXT3 or something like that. The virtual disk however is then subject to access by only one person at a time.. you no longer have the advantage of network storage where anybody can access.. still that might work well in your case.

LaPastenague - Thank you so much - I understand "most" of this....I would probably be OK if only one person could access it at a time but my airport extreme is my network router and I have three macbook airs so I am now wondering how would I connect the WD MyCloud to the network as it only seems to have usb 3.0. I really like the idea of having 3Tb of storage mirrored and being able to access it over wireless or externally over the internet which this seems to offer. Or if you have an alternate device that you might recommend I'd love to know as this is what I came up with in my research without having to spend another $1000+ :-)

You have the wrong device or the wrong specs.

WD My Cloud is an ethernet device..

Please read the specs in full.

It has.. and I quote

Gigabit Ethernet

USB 3.0 expansion port (x2)

The USB are expansion ports.. ie you plug in a second hard disk for backup. Or more capacity.. You do not plug it into a computer for USB connection.. that will not work.

IMHO.. and it is just that..

It is far better to buy the single disk version.. and plug in a My Book of the same capacity and run automatic backups.

If you think Mirrored drives = backup.. the answer is only partly..

Mirror protects from a failed drive.. It has no protection whatsoever from somebody accidently deleting their photo library.. and then thinking.. can I get this back from the mirror.. answer NO.. you do not have a backup.. and therefore it is cheaper and better to forget about mirrors.. and buy the single disk version. Also buy a USB drive and plug into the my cloud to run backups.. these are real backups and the disk can be swapped for even more secure storage offsite.

If you do want mirror buy larger NAS with 4x drives.. so you can use Raid 5 or Raid 10 or many other of the superior methods.. the efficiency is much better.

WD My Cloud plugged by ethernet into a Extreme or Time Capsule. will do this well.

Do you have extreme or TC.. as you seem to swap terms as if they are the same.. the TC has internal disk and AE does not.. also what model are you talking about. Gen1-5 and Gen6 are very different in the AE specs.
