Thanks Mike. I tried booting the recovery disk by command r, and performed a disk repair and permissions repair. It seems to have worked. I then ran a virus scan and all was clear. It is working well at the moment.

Virus scan? Do yourself a favor and get rid of whatever anti virus you're using. You don't need it and it will end up doing more harm than good. Keep OS X up to date and don't download from questionable sites or torrents, don't click on links that pop up in web browsers or emails and you'll be fine....in short common sense computing.
I know that this is now off topic, but I would like to know in what way, the Apple OS protects you from intruders. I have used Nortons for many years and there have been numerous intruders discovered and dealt with. I am prepared to learn about the need for third party protection and will look into this more sometime.

Norton is probably the reason you had a damaged OS X. You should uninstall Norton ASAP. Take a look at Thomas Reeds excellent site http://www.thesafemac.com/

Eventually I took the iMAc to the Genius Bar and it was found to have a faulty video card. This was replaced for free as it was part of a recall program form Apple.
What is annoying about this is that Apple would have known that my model had the faulty card but had not informed me I may have innocently paid several hundred dollars to bet it fixed.
