iphone 5s in airplane mode and disabled

My iphone 5s is in airplane mode and disabled because i have locked myself out of my phone. it froze and i reset it and it prompted me to enter a password and i am not sure what my passcode is. All of this happened while i was on the airplane, hence the reason my phone is in airplane mode. I keep trying to erase and restore my phone through itunes, but i keep getting a message about checking my internet connection . I am not quite sure how to unlock my phone.
