Would be grateful for any advice on how to take high(er) resolution screenshots than I get with the default SHIFT COMMAND 4 shortcut. Thanks for any and all help.

Hi If you have firefox 43.0 or greater
Go to Develop menu
Enter Responsive Design Mode
Top left corner you can take a screen shot, 1920 X 1800, you can also do a custom setting, I have used 4K or even 8K, or any size you desire.

on El Capitan on a retina mac it depends on the screenshot format you use: if you use PNG, apple scales it down so it appears the right size. If you use TIFF you get the actual high retinal resolution (but never any higher than that)

This is incorrect.
A screenshot is at the full resolution of the screen. Nothing is scaled down. Everything would look the “right size”.
So this is the one that I couldn't get to appear larger - though it actually looks pretty big in this reply box. Thanks to everyone for thinking about this...

Thanks. I want to capture screenshots and upload them to a blog and the first images I tried to capture were really tiny and difficult to read.
The solution depends on the source of your screen shots. What's the source? Can you zoom in before taking the screen shot?

Yes, there is a OS X zoom. Look for it in the accessibility preference pane.

For a blog, that's for sure! It's 2204 x 282 pixels.
Yes, something else is scaling it way down if boysx3 is sending to the blog as is.

One thing I could recommend is using Command + and enlarging the item on the screen, then take your screen shot. Not perfect, but it will at least be larger to start with.
