Can I use iTunes to download audio books from the Store to an iPod Classic?

My wife and I have only one iPod - an iPod Classic. When we purchased it back in 2008, we were able to use iTunes to transfer music CD's to it with no problem. Now, 7 years later, we have a new version of iTunes - and it appears that the iPod Classic is no longer supported! We're planning a trip, and want to download more CD's and some audio books to our iPod Classic, so I'm concerned. Can we use the latest version of iTunes with our iPod Classic>
