New Macbook with intermittent internet connection, wifi OK

Mac Pals:

New 2015 MacBook. Very nice. I have a Netgear N150 wireless router. All other devices work well with it, including a number of MacBook Pros, iPhones etc. My new MacBook loses internet intermittently for a few minutes at a time fairly randomly. It is not losing wifi, just internet. Now, if I trigger the login page on my browser for the router, internet comes back. Any ideas here?

In response to some of the newer posts: This is not a router problem, I've had the same problem on three different routers. And all of my other devices (I have many) keep their internet active the whole time when the Macbook's goes down. This is definitely a problem with the Macbook.

Clicking the wifi icon and waiting while it searches for other networks, for me anyways, does not force my internet back. I have to turn wifi off and then back on again.

Tech support call in 4 minutes! Let's see what happens!

OK so here goes:

Spent an hour and fifteen minutes on the phone just now. The guy was really good.

The first thing we did was Reset the SMC and also the PRAM.

To reset the SMC you shut down the machine. Press Shift, control, alt and the power button together and then release. Then press the power button to turn the machine on. Unfortunately there is no way of finding out if the SMC reset worked. On older macs, the MagSafe light flashes but obvs this machine doesn't have that. To ensure it was reset, I did it a few times, holding the four buttons down for a while, and also just pressing them quickly.

We then did a PRAM reset. Shut down the machine and then press the power button to turn it back on. Instantly press and hold Command, alt, P and R. If you see the apple logo pop up then it hasn't worked. You should hear the startup chime again on a black screen but a lot louder as it resets the sound settings. Then let it boot.

I then rebooted and everything looks as per normal. He wasn't going to stay on the line waiting to see if it dropped out again so he gave me some steps to take if it happens again: in this order

• If it drops out, go to your network prefs - in the advanced section, and record what it says about the tcp/ip settings and also the DNS settings. He said he was interested to see if anything changed there when the problem occurs.

• set up a new user account on the machine and use that to see if it happens under a different account.

• if it still persist, go into safe mode, and see if it happens in safe mode (hold shift on startup)

• if then it still persists, see if it happens from the recovery partition. (hold Command and R on restart) and then go to "get help online". see if you can replicate the issue there.

Thats as far as we got. But let me say this. Since I reset the PRAM and the SMC I have been online for over an hour now and not one dropout.

I have a call back scheduled for 6pm which is in 7 hours time, for them to continue with the issue and see if it has happened again. I struggle to believe it might be as simple as that but so far all signs point towards it being fixed for the time being.

If it drops back out again I will be back on hear letting you all know straight away

I've had the same issue for a while. I realized turning the machine off and back on solves it, but as soon as I hook up the HDMI it gets triggered once again. Can you tell me whether you hook up your machine to an external display through an HDMI cable and still remain without the problem? I have been dealing with customer service for several weeks now trying all the things you described but the issue still seems to be triggered by connecting the HDMI. Even after I unhook it from the external display the problem will remain there until I reset the computer. It's really odd. Turning the wifi on and off also immediately fixes it for about 20-30 mins and then it happens again.

At this point I've ruled out the HDMI being the source of the problem. I completely reset my computer and still have the same problem without ever plugging in the HMDI. Do you have a lot of other WiFi signals that you pick up? I posted a question about this here How to fix intermittent Wi-Fi? and the person who answered seems to suggest that it's a problem with the signal being crowded. I was using my computer somewhere else for a few a days and did not have the issue so I'm starting to think he was right.

I know this is late in the game, but I am experiencing this very same problem with both my and my wife's new MacBooks. My wife even had hers swapped out at the Apple Store. Same issue. The annoying fix is having to fully quit Safari, turn off Wifi, and start over. Then everything is good.

I'm running two AE's (6th Gen) with the settings that Apple sets during set up.

It does this whether I'm home, or at the office which is a completely different Wifi set up.

I love my Mac, and hope this problem gets resolved.

Is it just Safari that isn't working, or anything that needs the network? Mine was just Safari. I thought I fixed mine a few posts up, however I hadn't, but the other day I finally found the the real answer. If it's just Safari I'll post what helped me when I get home, I'd post it now, but I can't find it and need to look through my personal computer's history.
