iMac doesn't wake after installing 16GB extra Ram

This morning I added 16 GB RAM (2x8GB) (EAN 0649528762139 Vendor: CT2C8G3S160BMCEU) to my iMac so it has now 24GB. Everything seemed OK until my iMac went to sleep. After that I couldn't wake it up. I had to manually shut it down by holding the power button for 10 seconds. I then started it up after which I got a panic report. A few hours after that I had the exact same problem. After that I switched it of and changed the places of the Dimms.

Originally I had 8GB (2x4GB) in slot 0- dimm 0 and slot 1- dimm 0. I put the new one in slot 0- dimm 1 and slot 1- dimm 1 after which the problems started so I tried and switched it as follows:

Then I removed one 8GB dimm (so 16 GB in total): system awakens from sleep several times.

The I switched the 8GB dimm in the system with the other one I had removed: no awakening from sleep.

Bingo, I thought, this one is causing the problem.

Now today I got the dimms replaced by my supplier but the problem is not gone.

Again the iMac doesn't awake from sleep. I tried to switch positions again but no solution.

I tried the same as yesterday: removing one 8GB dimm and let system go to sleep: system does not wake up.

Removed the one 8GB from system and put the other 8GB dimm in. Let system go to sleep. System does wake up as normal.

Any suggestions since it's hard to believe I got a second faulty set of dimms...

I returned the 16GB (2x8GB Dimms) back to my supplier. Since he didn't have the Dimms with the correct part number available he kindly refunded me my money. I ordered the correct part-number (CT3650255) with Crucial directly through their website. Paid 7 EUR extra to get the Dimms within 1-3 working days. The next day they were already delivered. Thanks Crucial for speedy delivery!

But to my HUGE surprise the part number on the packaging was CT2C8G3S..... yes indeed, the same number that was on the Dimms I got from my Belgian supplier.... I wasn't too happy about that. The invoice however stated Part number CT3650255 while it also mentioned under Material: CT2C8G3S.

So it seemed I was stuck with the same Dimms. I put them in my iMac, let it go to sleep and IT WOKE. Did the test several times this weekend: short sleeps, longs sleeps: everytime my iMac awakens.

My 3 cents: this must be from another series than the Dimms I bought in Belgium (because visually the package looks exactly the same). The ones I got from Crucial directly work alright. The others (remember 1x8GB added gave no trouble, the other 8GB Dimms gave troubles, used alone or used in combination with the first 8GB) must have been from a faulty series.

Hey John,

Another possibility is that it isn't the RAM at all. Are you, by any chance, using a bluetooth keyboard and mouse? Because I had (have?) this exact problem and never changed or added new ram. I have a 16gb iMac from Apple directly. There are several threads of people having this problem. The problem seems somewhat intermittent meaning you think it's fixed and then it hits you again and you can't reliably wake it up. Those are my symptoms at least and I've had not much help from either Apple support or the community at being able to fix it either.

Anyway, maybe for you it really was the RAM and it's fixed and you're in the clear. But maybe it's something else entirely...

(iMac not waking up from sleep after Yosemite upgrade )

Hey,

I'm quite sure it isn't bluetooth issue because I never experienced this problem in almost 2 years with the default 8GB RAM installed. And since I put the extra 16GB which I ordered form Crucial directly (BTW ordered wednesday at 2pm, delivered at thursday 3pm ⚠) the problem has never occurred again. It is almost 100% the Dimms I got here in Belgium which caused the problem.

Thanks for your input.
