GPU switch causing graphics issues on my new Retina MacBook Pro 15 (Mid 2015)

Every time I open or close Lightroom 6.1 (Lightroom uses the AMD R9 card) the computer will switch from the Iris Pro card to the AMD R9 card; and there will be some weird artifacts on the screen for some seconds, then they will disappear. The artifacts are like mouse arrow trailing, some black or odd colors on some areas in the form of small squares on the LCD, etc.

If I disable the Automatic Graphics Switching on System Preferences the problem will disappear immediately. Clearly it's related to the GPU switch process. I've tested the Laptop as well with Mac OS X 10.11 DP1 and DP2 El Capitan and the problem is still there. I've tried with other GPU intensive applications like Apple Photos and the same thing will happen.

Any idea how to fix it? is Apple aware of this situation?, I've read some articles from Oct-Nov 2014 but I would have thought by this time, 6 months later the issue has been fixed, especialy with a new laptop model (2015) and the latest Yosemite fixes.

Thanks

I have the same model with the same problem, I first thought it was the HW, I went back to apple, they replaced the mother broad, but the flash (intermit blackout) was still there. The engineer said apple told him that the black out flash was caused by switching Graphics card. So I came here, and I saw that gfxCardStatus can monitor the GPU Change. so I downloaded it. I found out that it is true, some Sites or apps, are buggy, and causes the auto GPU Switch to jump from card to card, causing the screen to flash.

The engineer told me if I don't want to see the screen flash, just turn the auto switching off, and it will stay on the AMD card (which uses more power) but I want to stay on the internal card. I am sure a lot of you are having this problem! I would recommend to use gfxCardStatus, and you can choose which card you prefer to use, or monitor which apps jumps from card to card

I bought 2 weeks ago the macbook pro Mid 2015 too with OS X 10.11.6 and the screen glitches every time the computer switch the video chip to the dedicated one (The Iris to the AMD). Half of the screen black black (1 time in 1 second) every time (the mac is NEW).

*** APPLE?!?! WHY I ALWAYS HAVE PROBLEMS WITH EVERY PRODUCT I PURCHASE TO YOU?!?!?!

Hi, I am glad to have found this thread with others with the same dGPU issues. I previously had a Late 2013 MacBook Pro 15" Retina and the screen would flicker under normal use where half of the menu bar, a third or the whole screen would flash to black, I was able to replicate it at the Apple Store and after 2 months of bad customer service where my logic board and display were replaced, my MacBook was damaged and being told by the managers that there was no issue and that I should just take it home, I finally arranged a replacement and was recently given a 2015 dGPU model that has the exact same issue unfortunately and it seems to be even more prevalent where even the whole screen shuts down. It would seem like a hardware defect in these machines as the differences between the 2013 and 2015 are very minor and during the entire ownership of the 2013 model I had the issue, where the software was always updated. The 2015 model is fresh from Apple and on the latest software it seems to have the same problem. it also seems to me that it happens a bit more often when it is warm, which would exclude the issue as a software one and would direct towards a hardware defect. Also, the fact that the issue is consistent in the 2013 and 2015 models, that have different graphics cards and firmware, would rule out any firmware issues and points towards any hardware that is involved in the graphics switching mechanism that stayed consistent throughout these models. There have been many threads on this issue scattered around the internet for years, including a couple I made myself and in many cases like mine the issue has been escalated to engineering teams that have diagnosed it as a software issue and have produced updates that were unsuccessful and then have said that the issue cannot be replicated, leaving the case unresolved. This has been an arduous ordeal and hope Apple finally works out what is wrong and fixes it as soon as possible and hopefully deals with this better than they did for the 2011 MacBook Pro issue as I have a machine with a display that flickers and intermittently turns off, which is not acceptable from machines that cost between £1999-£2199.

good thing that I found this thread (though there is no solution to this issue yet, it's a comfort to see that I'm not alone).

I've just bought my 15in MBP (about 3 weeks old) mid 2015 and one of the main reasons for my purchase was seeing the massive glitchfest from the new 15in MBP (2016)...

The issues that I see are:

1) At startup, when I'm logging in, some geometrical glitch when the bar is loading

2) When I'm using Opera, if I start the program and there are some tabs open, lot of glitchy stuff that disappears when I drag the windows or something like that

3) The first issue, that never happened again, happened when I was downloading the Sierra update to El Capitan, in App Store. The whole download page became totally glitched, had to restart App Store to get back to normal

Disabling automatic graphic switching didn't stop the issues. Also I waited and installed the new Sierra update (they said it would resolve 2016 MBP issues and I was hoping that it would resolve mine), with no luck.

I actually don't know if I take it to an Apple Store or just live with it (it's enraging with a machine this expensive, but it is not a major issue, doesn't affect my work, I'm just worried that it can escalate somehow to something worse)

Anyone has any update on this issue?
