Macbook pro running slow after upgrading to Yosemite (FileVault disabled)

Hi everyone!

I have upgraded my system to Yosemite the last week and I have been experiencing a lot of lag, from the booting to opening apps. I have searched through every post in every forum and can't find a solution. I have found similar situations with users that had the Clean My Mac app installed, which I have deleted already. I have disabled FileVault, repaired the disk permissions, reseted the PRAM and even the SMC. I'm out of ideas, please help me!

Here's the EtreCheck report:

Yosemite 10.10.3 introduces Photos which will try to upload all your pictures to iCloud. This can saturate your network until after all your images are uploaded. If you have a large library, this could be part of your problem.

Chrome is consuming a very large percent of your resources both CPU and memory.

You might want to launch Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor and see if there are apps that are using lots of disk I/O bandwidth or network bandwith. CPU and Memory as well, but just do not ignore the disk and network bandwidth as potential performance slow down sources.

You have a lot of kernel extensions installed. Do you need all of them, or have you been collecting them over time and just not cleaning them out when you no longer use them. Kernel extensions are often very operating system version specific, and sometimes when a new OS version is installed, older kernel extensions do not always play nice. If you decide to remove any of these, you should use the "Vendor's" uninstall instructions or utilities

You might also want to search these discussion forums for some posts by "Linc Davis". He gives some very detailed instructions on other things to check that help identify performance issues.

Jun 29, 2015 7:31 AM in response to menchacacesar

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

I found Yosemite to be absolutely terrible! Upon eventually booting up after 10 mins or longer each time, the mac would then just freeze. I only went up to Yosemite to use a piece of software that wasn't compatible with Mountain Lion. So I've just gone back to ML just now. So relieved to have my mac back up and running properly. Search endlessly on various forums and most were having issues with Yosemite. So if you can't resolve your issue you may want to just downgrade to your previous version.

My process:

  • installed original disk snow leopard 10.6.3
  • top left apple icon - Update software to 10.6.8 in order to be able to access the app store, where I previously purchased ML
  • Feel great as all is back to what is was!!🙂
