Playlists and music are not syncing (can't add any music to my iPhone now)

I've been having a lot of trouble with Apple Music! I have a pretty large iTunes library (25k) and have been using iTunes Match. At first things seemed okay on my iPhone 6. I added a couple of albums and it was good.

Then I got iTunes 12.2 and the music I added from Apple Music showed up greyed out. Nothing I did seemed to make those songs want to become available. I saw someone posted to delete the songs from the iPhone library and then add them using your Mac and then it would show up on both. No dice. I toggled Music on and off and had it re-download my music library to my iPhone. I still can't see the albums I added on my Mac (and which are clearly in my Mac library).

Now I can't add anything to my iPhone library. When I browse for an album not on my iPhone and click the "Add to My Music" button, it says okay, does the check mark thing, and then a few seconds later the icon switches back from a checkmark to a plus sign.

Basically I can't add music to my iPhone at all because I can't sync it to my computer (since now it syncs only through Apple Music), it isn't syncing changes from my Mac to my iPhone, and I can't add anything from Apple Music to my iPhone. Help!

iPhone 6, iOS 8.4

That's an excellent thought, but I ran into two issues when I tried it. 1) iTunes told me that music added to my library from "Apple Music" cannot be synced to my device. That's pretty much a non-starter. 2) Though it sounds lame, I shouldn't have to use a cord. One of the biggest features of Apple Music is the iCloud Music Library being, well, in the cloud. I should absolutely not need to use a cord every time I want to sync playlist changes. It's not like I had to before either. With iTunes Match, changes to playlists reflected immediately on other devices "wirelessly". It's obviously bugged, and I just hope Apple notices sooner rather than later.

Yes...this works, BUT then you loose all Apple Music you downloaded for offline listening when you disable iCloud Music Library. When iCloud Music Library is enabled, iTunes thinks you have iMatch turned on (even if you did not subscribe) and you can sync via Cloud, but device does not get library from cloud. So you have a choice: keep iCloud off and load your library OR enable iCloud to save Apple Music for offline.

Anyone have another solution?

Try turning off iCloud Music Library> then sync with iTunes

In the process, you will lose all the saved offline music.

Next, turn on iCloud Music Library.

All you music is in sync locally on the phone. (Logo of offline sync [phone logo] is present)

After enabling iCloud Music Library, syncing of music from iTunes to iPhone is not possible.

Next is to redownload all the saved offline music again.

PS:

IMHO, the new integration of #AppleMusic with iTunes is a pain in an a*s.

They should consider for people who had limited internet quota.

They need to make syncing of offline music from iTunes to iOS possible, but not by downloading it again from the Cloud.

Hi everyone,

I had the same problem: Previously I was using iTunes Match. After upgrading to the free trial period of Apple Music, my music and playlists were still accessible on iOS, but not in iTunes on OS X. In iTunes on OS X, my whole library, which I keep in the cloud only on my main machine, was grayed out. A few songs that were local/downloaded were not grayed out.

Here is what worked for me:

1. Make a (Time Machine) backup of your iTunes database, comprising of "iTunes Library Extras.itdb", "iTunes Library Genius.itdb", and "iTunes Library.itl". (You can delete iTunes Library.xml, it will be re-generated.)

2. In the preferences, deactivate iCloud Music Library and Apple Music. Give it some time to process. (Note that this will screw up all your playlists because the songs in the playlists are no longer in the library. Hence, the backup first! So, don't worry.)

3. In the preferences, re-activate iCloud Music Library and Apple Music.

4. Close iTunes.

5. Restore the three backed up files.

6. Re-open iTunes. Now my playlists and library were restored and my songs in the cloud were no longer grayed out and were playable.

Best,

Thorte

It sounds like there are a couple different issues going on in this thread, but I believe I can fix this one. I had the same issue, finally figured it out:

  1. On your phone, in Music, go to My Music, make sure you are in Library (at the top).
  2. Below, you'll see a tab that says Artists, with a little down triangle next to it. Select the triangle.
  3. In the menu that shows up, there is a switch for Show Music Available Offline - Unselect this.

When that switch is selected, your phone will only show music that is actually on the phone. I'm not sure how mine got selected in the first place, but it took a good long time for me to figure this out.

I believe this is separate from the issue where music in OS X itunes is greyed out. I haven't had that problem, but my hunch would be: in your OS X itunes, go to Preferences -->> General -->> check both Show Apple Music iCloud Music Library. I know people have been suggesting unchecking those, but I do not think that's what you want.

Similar issue, I was trying to fix my iPhone and iPad not syncing with my Macs and tried to log out of iTunes and turn off iCloud Music and turned them back on on my iPad and iPhone.

But it seems to be working now after many hours. So was likely just a server issue.

I just added a new playlist to my Mac, added an Apple Music song to it, and when I checked my iPad about a minute later it was there, so for now it is working good.

There are a, potentially, bunch of issues happening with Apple Music that are breaking down the whole process. This tip above sort of solved one of my problems, which was one specific song I added on my iPhone to my library wouldn't show up on my iPhone.

However, I still can't seem to add something from my Mac or my iPad and trigger it to make the changes to my iPhone. I added an album and two playlists on my Mac and for some reason it won't load on my iPhone but it shows up just fine on my iPad. Changes I make on my iPhone, like adding things to my library or playlist changes, show up on my Mac.

I guess there are a bunch of things happening and not happening. What would be *amazing* is basically something to indicate the library has been updated or some way to trigger it to refresh the library. I've tried quitting the app on my iPhone and reopening it but it's unclear if that refreshes it. I also can't tell if some of the problems are simply server issues, like the server is down and not loading.

I have read hundreds of posts on this topic in different forums over the past day, and still not sure about anything here. So I will try to put it in the simplest way:

Is there a way to use apple music and save music for offline listening (which means I guess enabling icloud music library on my iPhone) AND keep my old iTunes playlists both in iTunes and my iPhone?? To me it looks like there isn't a way, but would love to be wrong.....

Yeah.

On your phone:

Go to Settings -> Music -> Turn off iCloud Music Library

On itunes:

Sync playlist and music like you use to with earlier versions.

YYou should see all your music sync to your phone . (After iTunes sync)

Then on your music app there's a FOR YOU and NEW tab when u can search for the music u want . Make sure Apple music is highlighted at the top. Anyway when u search for the album / song u want click on it and there should be three dots to the side of the song . Click those . Select add to my music . Then u should see a check mark saying it was adding successfully . Next click the dots again and select the make available offline . U should see a little device icon show up near the song

Playlists and music are not syncing (can't add any music to my iPhone now)
