iPhoto 11 - Problems With Photo Locations

Now that I can finally get back into my iPhoto library, I'm trying to update the locations on some recent photos. With no luck!

1) On the photos that have embedded location information, I can see the location name BUT the map is blank. It makes me worry that the location data is defective. Any ideas on how I can get the map to display. (I actually DO see the correct map for a brief instant before it switches to the blank white box you can see in this screen capture)

2) On the photos with no embedded location data, I usually use my web browser to search for my location using maps.google.com, then I copy and paste the place name (and address) exactly as maps.google.com shows it. Always worked in the past, will not work now! I just tried it with the location name "Parco Acquedotti Appia Antica, Via Lemonia, Rome, Metropolitan City of Rome, Italy". For kicks, I tried "Detroit, Michigan" instead - also no luck!

Anyone know what causes this in iPhoto 11, and what I could do to correct it? Thanks!

Hello,

it seems that I am using exactly the same configuration as yours :

iPhoto 8.1.2 and Snow Leopard, creating the API + credentials, changing the code of googlemap.html from

src="http://www.google.com/jsapi?key=ABQIAAAAUf_qajf1-p8SUXIhbPrkJRSdqNO9DHQ3Pe7dmEbj ibfx65pwcBRkf2BLR1Z-ToHuZvgRRBJksKA-WQ"

to

src="http://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?key=my_key&signed_in=true&sensor=false"

but I am unable to find the file from Léonie which works for you. Could you send a link toward it or correct the wrong code ?

Thanks by advance

Many thanks to you Léonie for that link towards a working googlemap.html file.

It works as a charm for me, but when I try to replace your key by my personnal one, it does not work !!!??

I am in the same configuration ( iPhoto 8.0.2 and SnowLeopard ) than Greg Kolar (page8).

Can I continue to use it with your key (it is really occasionnally) or should I try to ask google a new API key with other choices (Server instead of browser ? other ?).

Thanks anyway to have permitted to recover this great feature of locating a picture from iPhoto.

I also bought Houda Geo which fullfills my need by locating a picture (and changing its tag) from a GPS track log of the same time period.

Don't ask, just use it as long as you need it.

But try to get your own API key to work, to be on the safe side. It is disconcerting, that your own key is not working.

Houdah Geo is great. I am using JetPhoto Studio for geocoding. I like to assign the GPS before I import the photos to my Photo Libraries. This way the GPS is embedded in the master files.Jetphoto can also do reverse geocoding and write the address to the descriptions. And create GoogleMaps with pins for the photo locations. That is why I applied for the API key originally.

Thank you for answer and permission ; I will try again with a new key.

Houda Geo do include latitude and longitude to the photos from a GPS's recorded track, but the process to add these metadatas to the existing pictures in "Photos" library is a little bit complicated :

- export the picture from "Photos"

- Geocode the picture with Houda Geo and GPS recorded track.

- import the geocoded picture into "Photos"

- Suppress the original picture not geocoded.

Of course I could upgrade the Mac Os to Sierra which is said to allow modifications of "Photos" database ... but some softwares I own would need upgrade too

That is why I add the GPS to the photos before importing to Photos, if possible.

If you can extract the latitude and and longitude from a track or from a photo taken at the same time, you can type the latitude and longitude directly into the Info panel for a photo, where it says "Add a location". enter first the latitude in degrees, then a space character and the longitude. Photos in El Capitan will look up the place and add it.

If the track is in .gpx format, you can read it in Textedit, if all fails. My .gpx track looks like this - just a simple list of latitude, longitude , and elevation, followed by the date and time in UTC.

<trk>

<name>ACTIVE LOG082903</name>

<trkseg>

<trkpt lat="64.212469" lon="-20.740140">

<ele>119.362</ele>

<time>2015-08-19T08:29:03Z</time>

</trkpt>

<trkpt lat="64.212531" lon="-20.740141">

<ele>104.237</ele>

<time>2015-08-19T08:30:27Z</time>

</trkpt>

<trkpt lat="64.212561" lon="-20.740029">

<ele>107.718</ele>

<time>2015-08-19T08:37:54Z</time>

</trkpt>. .....

It is easy to scroll down to the time I want (minus time zone offset to UTC) and to copy the latitude and longitude directly from the track.
