Hi I was looking at Apple Maps and trying to approximate the distance of a street, I noticed the distance on the scale bar show up as vd units.
I'm not sure what these are, i'm assuming they should be Yards in which case wouldn't the logical abbreviation be yd?
iPhone 5s, iOS 8.3
maybe it's just cut off.
Could be, I hadn't thought of that. Maybe the transparency for the scale bar extends beyond the bar and covers the text and is only transparent for the map layer underneath.
What Region do you have in settings? For the United states it should go from ft to mi or from m to km. Based on my tests, yards isn't an option.
Edit: From your screen shot I realize you're in the UK. Changed my region to UK and sure enough I get vd as well.
Hi anypats the region is UK, m to km is fine if set to kilometers in settings but set to miles when scaling in the scale bar reads miles (mi) down to 0.125 miles then switches to 332 vd which I assume is supposed to be Yards.
Not sure if this is correct but I found that vd when used in distance can stand for "vertical distance"
I though of that, but it doesn't work, Vertical distance would mean height or elevation a unit of measurement not suitable for a scale bar. I Think Templeton Peck was right it might be that is is supposed to display as yd but the y gets cut to a v because of the scale bar. It would be interesting to know it this happens on Maps on other iOS screen sizes.

I'm on an iPhone 6. Just tested on an iPad mini and it also shows "vd"
Well I guess it must just be an oversight on Apple's part, I suppose it's not that rare. It would be nice if there was some sort of department glitches and bug could be reported to so they can fix these things in the next update.
I just went down to the lowest possible scale and while set to the US it was 100 ft. Changing it to UK displayed 32 vd so that is about correct for yards.
