Today I got so frustrated I actually did download the suggested apps, and neither will open for me. One says it's damaged and the other says it's by an unauthorized "something or other" and suggested I put it in the trash immediately.

Like Tom said this is a security feature of the OS, because the application is not digitally signed. You can easily bypass this, and will only need to do it the first time.
Control-click the application icon and choose "Open". It should present a dialog saying this is from an unidentified developer, or something like that.
Click Open. That is it. After you've used the application, from then on you can open it normally by double-clicking, using spotlight or whatever method you like.
