HHow do I unlink Apple I.D. In IPhone 6

"unlink"?
Please explain
Thanks for reply. NO. My husband bought a new IPhone 6. He used his gmail email account, which is his main email account, as his Apple I.D. Then he changed his Apple I.D. to a new iCloud email account, but Apple doesn't allow him to delete the old I.D., the gmail email. So now when he wants to add it to iMessage or Face Time as another account to be reached at, it gives him an error stating this account is already in use. in trying to resolve the problem, Apple instructions are to remove the gmail I.D. from Game Center, iTunes or other services. Well, it's not linked to the first 2, & we don't know what other services it might possibly be linked to. Then the second Apple instruction is to Unlink The Apple I.D. & we're not sure how to do that.
SSee response to Sberman. Thank you.
I'm confused. Here's the way I read your remarks:
See the following:
Change your Apple ID - Apple Support
FFirst 4 bullets are correct.
FFifth bullet--he then tried to add his gmail email account to receive IMessages & FaceTime & he got the error that it is in use.
tthanks!

Well, yes, he would receive such an error because the third bullet said he had already done that!
EExcept that when I try to iMessage or Facetime him at his gmail account it does not go thru. That is precisely why I was wanting to go through the next step:Unlink the gmail account. thus my original question.
So if he does Settings > Messages > Send & Receive, does he see the gmail account listed under "You can be reached by iMessage at", and is it checked?
Similarly, for FaceTime, check Settings > FaceTime > You can be reached by FaceTime at
NNow we're communicating: when he enters the gmail account under Settings / iMessage or FaceTime / send & Receive / You can be reached.... / I enter his gmail account. It asks for PW to his iCloud ID, IT SAYS UNABLE TO VERIFY EMAIL BECAUSE ITS ALREADY IN USE. THEN I CLICK OK & it lists account as an ERROR.
I suggest the following:
Use your husband/s Apple ID to sign on to this page in a web browser:
https://appleid.apple.com/account/manage
Go to the main page, labelled "Name, ID, and Email Addresses" on the left. There you will see various headers, including:
Are those all set up correctly and verified?
I use my Apple ID (primary email address), which is not a "icloud.com" address, along with the Alternate Email Address (which is an "iCloud.com" address) simultaneously as FaceTime and iMessage addresses. I don't know if an Alternate Apple ID and Apple ID can be used simultaneously.
TThank you. the steps above yielded same results: Apple ID already in use. We suspect it may be because he used it (gmail ID) to download some apps still in use. When one of these apps is Updated, it doesn't allow him to download the update. He first has to delete it, then download it with the existing Apple ID (iCloud).
