Use either or both of the two links I posted above. Each disk has its own advantages:

The computer’s original disks will include the Apple Hardware Test, iDVD, and iWeb, as well as the other iLife applications if you choose not to upgrade to Yosemite.

Getting the Mac OS X 10.6 DVD is one of the things needed to upgrade to 10.7 or above.

Then why in

What to do before selling or giving away your Mac - Apple Support

does Apple say to do that?

What to do before selling or giving away your Mac

Learn how to back up and remove the data from your Mac before selling or giving the computer away.

When preparing to sell or give away your Mac, you may want to erase some or all files from its hard drive. But first determine whether you should back up your computer and disable certain features and services. These steps show the recommended sequence of actions:

  1. Deauthorize your computer from iTunes, if applicable.
  2. Back up your data using Time Machine or other backup methods for OS X Mavericks or Mountain Lion.
  3. If you use Find My Mac or other iCloud features on this Mac, complete these steps:
    1. Back up your iCloud content.
    2. Choose Apple Menu () > System Preferences, then click iCloud.
    3. Deselect the Find My Mac checkbox.
    4. Sign out of iCloud. When you sign out of iCloud, you're asked whether you want to remove iCloud data from your Mac. Removing iCloud data in this way makes sure that the data isn't also removed from any of your other devices that are using the same iCloud account.
  4. If you're using OS X Mountain Lion v10.8 or later, sign out of iMessage:
    1. In the Messages app, choose Preferences > Accounts.
    2. Select your iMessage account, then click Sign Out.
  5. Reformat your hard drive and reinstall OS X. Follow the appropriate instructions:
  6. After you reformat your hard drive and reinstall OS X, the computer restarts to a Welcome screen and asks you to choose a country or region. If you want to leave the Mac in an out-of-box state, don't continue with the setup of your system. Instead, press Command-Q to shut down the Mac. When the new owner turns on the Mac, the Setup Assistant will guide them through the setup process.

Step 5 fopr Mavericks says:

Erase your Mac, then reinstall OS X using the built-in recovery disk. Before you erase, back up your essential files. If you’re installing on a portable computer, make sure your power adapter is plugged in.

Important: To reinstall OS X, you must be connected to the Internet.

  1. Choose Apple menu > Restart. Once your Mac restarts (and the gray screen appears), hold down the Command (⌘) and R keys.
  2. If you’re not connected to the Internet, choose a network from the Wi-Fi menu (in the top-right corner of the screen).
  3. Select Disk Utility, then click Continue.
  4. Select your startup disk on the left, then click the Erase tab.
  5. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled) from the Format menu, enter a name, then click Erase.
  6. After the disk is erased, choose Disk Utility > Quit Disk Utility.
  7. Select Reinstall OS X, click Continue, then follow the onscreen instructions.Reinstall OS X

I did the above when I gave away my 2009 Mac Mini w/Mavericks and the recipient has had no problems.

Those instructions are for computers which originally shipped with Mavericks, not those which were upgraded to it. The same applies to Lion(unless the seller bought a USB thumbdrive installer), Mountain Lion, and Yosemite.

A Mac which was upgraded to Lion or above(except through a thumbdrive) cannot be sold or given away while the upgraded OS is on it.

From the Mavericks software license:

If you obtained your license to the Apple Software from the Mac App Store, it is not transferable. If you sell your Apple-branded hardware to a third party, you must remove the Apple Software from the Apple-branded hardware before doing so

Any Mavericks installation other than one which originally shipped with a Mac will have come from the Mac App Store.

The person to whom I sold My 2009 Mini had not problems update mavericks and install Yosemite later.

Also, if I recall previous versions of the Apple article did in fact differentiate between what originally came with the Mac and got into if it came with install discs. Not it does not.

Also, if I recall, the About OSX Recovery article used to discuss having to enter an Apple ID but now it does not.

How can i restore my Apple Macbook pro 2009 back to factory settings without a disk?
