iOS 8.4 Audiobooks Issues

I love enjoying an audiobook during long work days or car journeys and ordinarily I would use my iPhone to listen to them but since upgrading to iOS 8.4 I've encountered some serious issues with the new audiobook format.

Firstly, although I appreciate them grouping multiple audiobook files into one place and listing the chapters now, I really wish that I could see the actual chapter titles! This maybe wouldn't be as big an issue for me if it weren't for my major problem which is the fact that every time I open iBooks and load up my audiobook it's managed to lose my place and be somewhere random in the story (not so pleasant when it's a 50+ chaptered ASOIAF book). The last think I've also noticed is how the time bar never moves and stays at 0:00 when playing which would make navigating each chapter extremely difficult if the new fast forward controls actually worked.

All in all, there are some serious fundamental bugs in this new iBooks app that quickly need addressed. Very disappointing!

I am SO with you. How about the fact that with the update the audiobook files are no longer reading as "played" even after syncing in iTunes, so you literally have no clue where you're at. I tried a workaround where I converted my audiobooks into music to keep them as playlists, the music app no longer remembers position when it kicks out of the file, which it does quite frequently. So sad that functionality is taking such a downward turn.

I have also experienced every problem cited in the prior comments. I find it inexcusable that Apple would foist something this broken on its users with out testing. Every feature that made listening to audiobooks in iTunes easy and convenient has been eliminated and replaced with features that don't work. Most of the audiobooks I listen too are borrowed from our local library and ripped into iTunes. I used to keep audiobooks in iTunes as playlists and playback the book as playlist. I stopped doing this when Apple introduced iTunes Match because all the audiobook tracks were being copied to the cloud and quickly filled my storage quota. I switched to converting the playlists to audiobook format using Audiobook Builder. This released space in my cloud storage since audiobooks are not copied to the cloud. I am going to try going to that to see if I can get iTunes functionality back until Apple gets around to fixing iBooks. If keeping the books in playlist form doesn't work I plan to try MP3 Audiobook Player per Elbereth-UK's suggestion.

While this suggestion will remove the audiobook, I'd like to remove individual tracks as I listen. Not only does this free up space, but it allowed me to always know where I left off.The big flaw right now in this "thread" relates to the app jumping to some other point in the audiobook rather than where people stopped listening. Some audiobooks are 300+ tracks, taking up several GB of space. How do I remove tracks like I used to prior to the last iBook update?

I agree. Complete shambles - I listen to audiobooks all the time and this new version of iBooks has ruined the experience for me, especially as the app doesn't remember where I am in the book so I have to search through every time, and I haven't always made a note of what chapter I was on. I much preferred the Audible format of having a book in one to three parts with clear indications shown of the time left to play. It's ridiculously slow and clunky and is seriously making me consider a different brand of smartphone for my next upgrade...

I am very unhappy about the loss of a user friendly interface for my audiobook collection. It must be corrected to function as is did or better!

CLearly this was not tested well OR we audiobook lovers matter little.

As a long term customer of Audible I can access ITunes files via that app BUT REALLY Apple with the amount we spend on devices and downloads it is not good enough.

Sure wish I had looked at the reviews BEFORE installing this update o my iPad iphone5s and iPod. It seemed like a good idea to add audiobooks to iBooks. How hard can it be to allow it to use the labeling that comes with the books.

Now I can't listen to my most used book the Bible instead of 66 books clearly labeled with chapters as it was previously was now I have 1189 TRACKS. Then of course there is the problem of her you left off listening. you can't identify it and it's not saved.

I guess I will dust off the old iRiver MP3 player until I can find a way (perhaps another APP if I can find one) to listen to my books and magazines again.

I hope they fix this soon.

A problem I'm experiencing is that the iBooks app doesn't work very well when trying to play audio books through my car's on-board media system (Chrysler's UConnect). The old Music app allowed me too easily control audio book playback through my car controls, but trying to listen to audio books through the iBooks app has resulted in some very inconsistent playback. Books will sometimes stop playing through my car's speakers when the chapter changes, however, the book keep going on my iPod. I have to hit pause and play on my dash for the book to start playing through my speakers again. I'm not sure if this is an Apple or a Chrysler issue, but it still makes me mad that I had something that worked just fine until I "upgraded".

I had to develop a workaround by moving all of my books in iTunes from Audio books to Music and then setting up playlists for each book. This helps, but I still don't like the features of the new Music App. Too hard to rewind 15 seconds, etc. I'm definitely going to give the MP3 Audiobook app mentioned above a shot.

I have now noticed another really sad thing is that there is NO Siri support for audiobooks anymore either. I used to be able to ask her to play a book or a book playlist, and that is all gone now.

I had to use the horrible app "Smarter Player" to be able to do anything at all.

My audiobooks were all ripped from my CDs by Audiobook Creator. This is a great app for Mac OS. It makes standard m4b files, so I'm not sure what is going on.

I'm with you! Most of my audiobooks are also library downloads/ripped mp3's. I have them perfectly organized in iTunes- and all my "playlist" organization is GONE. I can only sort by author or title (my playlists group similar titles). What a crock! You'd think apple would spend a LITTLE time observing how we organize our material before stripping all the funtionality out! And about 60% of my audiobooks don't even show up in iBooks. ***???? Used to be I'd pop on the headphones, hit play-and the book I was currently listening to would cue up where I stopped. Well not only it can't remember where in the book I stopped- it can't even figure out I WASlistening to a book! I have to open iPhone, open ibooks, select book, scroll to where I stopped. GRRRRRRRRR
