iTunes 12.2 Very Slow On Search etc.

I just "upgraded" to iTunes 12.2 and I find it very slow on things like search, when I click on an album / artist / ...

I have a very large library and store things on my HD not on the cloud.

Sure my computer is old but I have lots of RAM.

Any ideas? Anyone else had issues?

I too am skeptical -- not critical of our fellow travellers just not sure there is one answer. And I can only imagine the mess I could make by trying these fixes.

Loosing date added would cause me to curse the ghost of Steve Jobs every time I played a song rather than the current couple of times a week I'm now down to.

For the moment I'll stand pat, hope the Cupertino boys read these posts and address our concerns.

Long run I'm afraid that where I'm at -- BIG library on my HD -- isn't where Apple is going -- streaming and cloud. Since we get iTunes "for free" ( the tens of thousands I've spent on Apple products over the years notwithstanding) we aren't the client, we're content. Guess I need to be on the look out for a stable third party solution. Yikes!

What about you anodyne?

Anodyne, if you're going to take the plunge, I've got a suggestion for you.

You might be able to preserve your Date Added data by writing it all into another field -- something you don't use for anything else. There's an applescript utility to automate this, so you can process your whole library in one go: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=thistagthattag

I'm not totally sure this will work because I've never used this script and I'm not sure whether it gives you access to all the fields you might want to consider as a "parking space" for Date Added info while your library is being rebuilt. I've used a similar ploy to preserve my Rating data by hard-writing it to the Description field. (Several years ago I lost all my ratings in a library meltdown, and the trauma lingers. But Rating is easier to handle, because there are only 5 possibilities, so I processed the tracks in batches with Doug's script called Multi-Item Edit.)

Anyway this might be something to consider.

So take this with a grain of salt, but I downloaded and installed 12.2.2 this morning because I figured it couldn't be significantly worse, and I think there are some modest (emphasis on "modest") performance gains. I had a couple of playlists to import from Bandcamp downloads, and although it's not up to pre-Apple Music levels, it appears to be somewhat quicker. I didn't do a before and after with a stopwatch or anything--this is more of a subjective impression--but whereas before I could pretty much drag and drop, leave to go make a sandwich, and get back before iTunes was done churning away, it didn't hang like it did before. The biggest difference I noticed is that now when you click "Done" after editing a newly imported playlist, it almost instantly goes back to your main view instead of chewing on it for a while.

YMMV, but I'll take whatever improvements I can get.

I'm feeling the same way, thought I'd wait it out a bit and see if they sent out another update, which seems to have happened yesterday. I have not yet installed this update, although I'm sure it won't make matters any worse, and I will when I get a chance at some point in the next few days. I can't believe they will have fixed the issues in one update and the last poster said it offered "modest performance gains" and is "somewhat quicker", not what I wanted to hear, was hoping for a complete change back to the way it was before the update.

But I agree with you about spending thousands of dollars on Apple products with the faith that their software would continue to do the same things that we've been using them for.

I also want to try to find some third party music app that serves my needs....that is translating the thousands of songs into useable, easily accessible, content. We'll have to invent one...

Keep me posted if you download the new iTunes update and I'll do the same.

The update says that it does try to improve overall stability and performance but nothing about speed, etc.

anodyne, the 12.2.2 version is working fine for me -- but then, my slow-down problem apparently was solved already by a new installation of 12.2.1 from the Apple Download site (not via the App Store).

I'm a little concerned that you've gotten yourself into a state of what we board-gamers call analysis-paralysis -- that's when you think so hard about some problem that you freeze up and do nothing. Unfortunately you don't have fellow gamers to helpfully scream at you to make your move. I'd say back up your files and try the new upgrade.

Haha, I think you're absolutely right, I totally have analysis/paralysis! I can't decide what to do...But I have done a few things, I did reinstall 12.2.1, and it didn't help...what I wanted to do is to reinstall cleanly then add my music and playlists again from a backed up copy, but just don't think that will help. I think also I've been waiting for a new update and now that its here I hope it helps...I just have been too busy to install it yesterday and today so far. Basically I'm just wallowing in my disgust and self-pity haha...thanks for the encouragement!

Hi Anodyne

I'm a first time poster on this forum, but just wanted to let you know that you should take the plunge and delete iTunes and then re-install. I should've done this ages ago!

Same issue as many others. Music library over 450GB and over 1TB of Video. Constant beach balling when using Artist view, and although this problem was resolved by using Album view, this doesn't suit my searching needs.

Found the post in this thread earlier about deleting/reinstalling, but here are the links again (thanks to the original poster JStrab). I delayed doing this as I worried that it would have to add everything back into iTunes again and take a day... wrong! The whole deleting and reinstalling process just took me 5 mins in total, and when I reopened iTunes everything is there in Artist view and working perfectly!

I've updated from Win 7 Professional to Win 10 and suddenly my ITunes 12.2.2 is working properly again. When I update information about e.g. tracks in artist mode it's possible without delays. It just happened to be like this and I'm happy. After installing Win10 I deactivated a lot of programs which seems to start together with Win10 and this made my computer as fluid and synchronized as Mats Hummels passing foot. I feel newborn.
