iTunes 12.2 Very Slow On Search etc.

I just "upgraded" to iTunes 12.2 and I find it very slow on things like search, when I click on an album / artist / ...

I have a very large library and store things on my HD not on the cloud.

Sure my computer is old but I have lots of RAM.

Any ideas? Anyone else had issues?

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Before I take the axe to my playlists what do you think is the "magic number" -- how few playlists do we need to make iTunes work?

I just did a count and I have something like:

450 playlists

15 smart playliusts

55,000 songs

360 GB

Following the advice from Julius I certainly can delete some playlists -- what do you think should be my target?

Given the challenges I have not done the latest upgrades so am running OS X 10.9.5 and iTunes 12.3.0.44 on an old i3 iMac with 8GB RAM

Always fun!

Thanks

Thanks for your informative post. I wasn't quite sure if you said you were able to re-import ALL of your playlists? Or are doing so little by little and have reached saturation? I too have suspected it was the playlists and was thinking of doing what you are doing but think I'll just slowly rebuild the essentials and learn how to use the browser option to navigate through my library.

So in answer to jayessemm I'm not sure what a max would be in terms of playlists, I'm also not convinced that if you delete a certain number of old playlists things would start working fine again. You could backup and try to do that, but I think in the conversion process to the 12 update things got corrupted and there is no other solution but the nuclear one and then rebuild, the max I'm not sure of.

Hope that all makes sense and thanks for the posts, very informative

Hey Dyslexicant,

I have no stake in any one particular cause, like I said, I had to delete all of mine and reload and the application works much better. So since you do not have playlists, did you do this? Move your music to a backup, delete iTunes, reload iTunes and then add all your music again? It definitely has something to do with upgrade to iTunes 12, so I would assume it has something to do with the way Apple Music was built in to the architecture of iTunes.

But when I did do all of the above, it worked normally again. I've been adding playlists and there definitely is starting to be some minute delays, for example, in switching from track to track in the editing process, so there does seem to be some correlation. But I have no idea what the heck is the problem.

I have noticed that when I use the Column Browse function to access and play albums and songs, it is different from having playlists of albums in that if you are playing a song and start browsing around to different albums and music, the album will stop playing on completion of the song or jump to the new album you are playing, its very irritating.

Anyway, just saying, obviously that has nothing to do with your point. But how many songs do you have in your library? How do you access your music? Through albums?

Sorry, couldn't edit my previous post to make an update. (No edit button to be found, help anyone?)

Noticed whilst editing some music I've added, and updating the artwork for them, that things have improved and dropped all lag time. NOTE: This was after removing all playlists (including top added, recently added etc.) and done WITHOUT reinstalling anything.

The lag with ADDING new music is still there, around 26-27 seconds, but editing and adding artwork once it's actually there, is now gone.

I hope this helps.

Personally, I don't use playlists, but with Apple Music now allowing me to add (almost) any song in iTunes to a new playlist, there's a whole new reason to use them. How ironic that in order to A.M. which allows all the music in iTunes to be used in playlists, that we have to update iTunes, which then only works properly when we remove all of our playlists - the very things we were trying to enable. What a cluster****.

Not sure if that has been mentioned before, but: no matter WHAT you do, as long as you're in the 'Artist' view, even importing a CD takes forever. So does the search etc. Switch to 'Album' and you're good.

Still disappointed about the latest developments of Apple, every update make things more complicated or more obscure.

Is 12.3.2 better / worse / the same?

After our challenges here I have not upgraded and am running 12.3.0.44; It ain't great but I'm living with it and only have to force quit once a week (that and remember to avoid the artist view!).

I know people said that 12.3.1 was even worse so I have not upgraded but I'm getting sick of that "Upgrades Available" pop up that can only be put to sleep until tomorrow.

What have you done?

Thanks

TTotally worked for me! After having iTunes run crazy slow with spinning candy after any task since JULY....I installed the new iTunes last night and to my great surprise after 15 hours of telephone support over the last 6 months....IT WAS FIXED...my personal Christmas Miracle....then today, the Apple tech person I had worked closely with during all this called me to let me know that the engineers contacted him to ask him to contact me and let me know this update should fix the issue and at least in my case...it did....

IT also corrected all issues I had with the itunesstore running slow as well....it was a good night. Best of luck to all my fellow sufferers! I hope you all get the results I did.
