I am haveing major problems with the dvd writer in my iMac (20-inch, Early 2008) . Since upgrading to Yosemite it will not play dvds that were burned on it previously. Purchased an external Samsung DVD burner and burnt a dvd. When I re inserted it into the external drive imac will not recognise the disc . It plays in a PC and on a DVD player. Any suggestions welcome

Did you use iDVD to render/author/burn the disc?
The only versions of iDVD that still work are iDVD '09 and iDVD '11.
What app are you using to try to play the DVD? Apple's DVD player doesn't work with external drives, try the free VLC media player http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

My iMac plays DVDs from my external LaCie drive just fine...
So does mine but Apples DVD player app doesn't recoginize the external drive, which was originally internal but I replaced it with an SSD. I now have to use VLC to play DVD's.
As long as the external is not an Apple "Superdrive", DVD player (or the Mac in general) will recognize any external burner - it has my LaCie for many years and now a new one from OWC.
Late 2009 iMac, removed the stock internal Apple SuperDrive and placed it in an external USB enclosure connected directly to the back of the iMac.
System Preferences says -

So I have system preferences set to open VLC when I insert a video DVD
That worked! DVD was a product issued by a rod builder where he moved older VHS tapes to DVD. Worked perfectly and immediately. Thank you.
