ios 8.4 battery life and overheating issue

Hello Apple

I have recently upgraded to ios 8.4 after reading that it came with new features and better performance, however, moments after the upgrade was done, I noticed that the battery dies quicker than it used to be. also when I'm making a phone call, my iPhone starts getting so hot that it makes if painful to keep holding the phone especially on the edges, I get scared that the battery might explode on my face.

I adjusted the battery usage and background apps just like they used to be on ios 8.3 any solution please?

I have iPhone 5s but it is not used much it was stored in its box until recently.

iPhone 5s, iOS 8.4

Is it possible to turn OFF the Stock Market App so that it doesn't work ..

or better yet ... is there a way to DELETE the Stock Market App as I never use it ?

I am of the opinion that it is one of the many Apple Apps that can NOT BE DELETED.

SO ... If it is possible to turn OFF the Stock Market App ... and how is that done ?

I want to stop the unwelcome expense and use of battery energy for Apple Apps that I do not want and of course never use.

Right now it is after Stock Market hours, and when I pull down the screen .. it reports the closing numbers for today ... indicating that it is ON and receiving cellular data against the wishes of the authorized owner operator while also at their expense.

Go do it to your iPhone and I betcha it works the same way ... however in your case, you would want to know stock market data second by second 24 hours a day and 7 days a week so that is no doubt welcomed by you and you would be happy to pay for it.

I want to OPT-OUT ... and really think such expensive no delete Apple Apps be done a on a voluntary basis to those customers who are willing and not to the customers who are unwilling.

Since I am unlearned ... I am guessing the Stock Market app .. can not be deleted .. and can not be turned off ... and that I, the unwilling .. have to pay for that constant and expensive use which is found to be odious, misplaced and a perpetrate.

However if I am in a misunderstanding ... please let me know.

Such technical information to sort out this conundrum is much appreciated.

You DO have a way with words. A way that discourages people from wanting to help you.

Go to Settings/Cellular and turn off the Stocks app if it bothers you. But that app is not draining your battery or your data allowance. I'm halfway through my billing period and it has used 0.1 MB. And when I go to Settings/General/Usage - Battery usage it doesn't show up at all, even when viewed for 7 days, which means it has used less than 1% of my battery.

I just checked my stats and mine are the same as yours.

I admire the personal grit you have Lawrence ...

I followed your advice a long time ago .. as I have 'turned off' in Settings>Cellular the Stocks App and all the others that I have no use for ... and the Stock Market App still works never the less.

At least on my iOS 8.4 for the 5s iPhone it does.

'Find my iPhone' App is on as is the 'CARR' App (California Roads and Highway from Cal-Trans) and a very few others that I voluntarily use such as the ICE Blackbox App (for neighborhood watch that I volunteer in).

Oddly enough in the Setting>Cellular is an icon for the Settings App that is 526 KB in size and there is a means to turn that one OFF .. which I have done and all heck breaks lose on my iPhone ... nothing works. The Settings App ... MUST be on with Cellular to get anything done with the iPhone.

As Settings App must have Cellular data connection going on .. to work the 'Find My iPhone' stuff and other Apps that I want to use is my guess.

So ... give it try your self ... and turn off Stocks as you have suggested .. and see .. if Stock Market really stops working for you.

For me .. it do not.

Like you .. I went to school and read books ... and I am pretty sure as unlearned as I am with a complex device as a Smart Phone I am doing it right .. and doing it exactly as you have recommended.

Stock Market pull down ... it works constantly for me and right now it shows the closing NASDEQ as 5,163.18 and the NYSE as 11,024.34 ... both of them in the green at about +65 ...

DOW J is listed and AAPL which I guess is Apple Inc is a plus 1.69

SBUX and NKE and more with 'show all' is available below that on the pull down screen.

I do have it OFF .. the Stock Market App selection as in the Settings>Cellular>Stocks 8.5 KB ... It was in the green switched on when I got the iPhone with the factory settings .. and for months it has been in the gray off position.

It is OFF right now as I write the current Stock Market values of today, and has been off for months.

Since it works any way ... despite being off and it is an Apple App that can not be deleted .. so it holds that the other Apple Apps .. such as the Health App when off ...

really .. really ... are not off.

So ... see if you can turn your Stock Market pull down off ... and if you can ... let me know.

I know your Stock Market pull down is working just as mine is right now ... so make it stop since you purport it can be done.

Once .. you actually do make it stop.

Mine do not do this ... I swear this is my witness that is accurate and complete to the best of my knowledge.

If I turn off Stocks in Settings/Cellular Data it stops Stocks from using cellular data, but it does not turn off the app. It can still work using WiFi. What you CAN do is go to the app and remove all stocks that it reports.

I guess you have not gotten the message, even though it has been repeated to you in multiple threads over many weeks: YOU CANNOT TURN OFF OR REMOVE ANY BUILT IN APPS. PERIOD. END OF DISCUSSION.

If this is a problem for you get a phone that behaves the way you think it should. Except you will find that none exist.

Wonderful Lawrence ...

I got the news now ... all Apple Apps stay working, gathering data such as the Health App and they can not be turned off nor can they be deleted.

Right now Microsoft OS 10 .. is in a 'RENT' mode where one do not buy the Operating System but rents it day to day.

Also Microsoft is in effort to come into PC over the internet and force the customer to download the OS behind their back with an unauthroized take over of their computer. and force them to rent the new Operating System.

The more they try to do that the more upset the Microsoft Windows community is getting and maybe Apple is headed that way with forcing Software on the Apple customer they can not get rid of, that is on and working in the background all the time.

So getting an Android Phone might be just as bad as getting an iPhone ... as they would do the same thing as Apple is doing in the way of a business practice that is so odious, misplace and a perpetration.

It makes a $15 Wall Mart phone so much more attractive as all I really want to do is make a phone call and send a text message.

Supposedly 7/10th of an Amp will kill people and maybe there is a way to hack smart watches and do it with more finesse then that.

Seems my iPhone is going to die in about 12 more months and then I will be done with Verizon and the iPhone as it is an expensive headache.

The iPod Nano Shuffle is about $49 ... and that might be the one for me on road tunes through my Kenwood as the iPod at $299 is not worth it as I am sure that also has Apple Apps that are always on and can not be deleted.

I appreciate your help with this rather complex, difficult to use and expensive Smarty phone that is a 'Turn Off' for me.

But telling people to splash out for a new battery straight away is? Do you get paid by Apple by any chance?

In the words of the great Peter Griffin: Shut-up Meg.

No, I don't believe I have said that the first step in troubleshooting is to get a new battery. Can you point to where I did? However, once people have exhausted all the end user troubleshooting options, the next thing to do is take the phone to Apple for evaluation. That may or may not lead to the recommendation to purchase a new battery.

Fortunately for all concerned, you don't get to decide who posts what here.

Well, upgrading to iOS 9 finally fixed for me what 8.4 had broken. Battery life is now back to normal, phone doesn't overheat, wifi and Bluetooth now maintain their connections. I'm glad Apple finally sorted it out after months of suffering. Glad I didn't splash out on sending the device in for 'servicing'.

Thanks Adilon07 for raising the issue and making everyone who had problems aware that they weren't alone.
