Since updating to 12.2 cannot update Ipod Classic

Since updating to 12.2 I cannot update my two Ipod Classics (120s).

When connected after install, both mysteriously caused new drivers to be loaded and then froze. Reboots etc. do not cure the problem, I'm guessing it's a total reinstall required ?

Any ideas? Or is it just a poor release again ?

If in doubt, rip it out.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

I ran into a similar problem with my Classic 120gb running Windows 7 64 bit. Prior to 12.2 update, no problems. Since updating I have had 2 rounds of issues. First when I initially connected my Ipod post update, it DID see the device but sent me through a new Ipod setup prompt. Thinking this was not correct, I aborted that wizard AND it apparently wiped all of my content off the Ipod.. Since then ITunes doesn't see the Ipod at all. When I connect the Ipod I get the Windows AutoPlay prompt asking me if I want to view the files, and the Ipod shows as Connected, but nothing happens in ITunes. I followed turningtest2's uninstall and reinstall steps but unfortunately am having no better luck with the Ipod. I left it connected for a few hours to see if it would appear but it did not. I also tried installing ITunes on 2 other PC's from scratch and connecting the Ipod with exactly the same results. It would appear Apple did something to affect the Classic compatability with this last patch. I know it is a discontinued product but come on! I paid a handsome price for this device and it used to work great before this. Very frustrated!

I trust you have done a "hard reset" on your iPod, the instructions can be found here:

Learn how to reset your iPod - Apple Support

In a nutshell,

iPod, iPod (scroll wheel), iPod (touch wheel), and iPod (dock connector)

To reset your iPod, follow these steps:

  1. Slide the Hold switch to the locked position and then back again.
  2. Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons together until you see the Apple/iPod logo (about six to eight seconds). You might need to repeat this step.

If you still can't reset your iPod, follow these steps:

  1. Plug your iPod into a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet.
You can also plug your iPod into your computer. Make sure that the computer is on and isn't set to go to sleep.
  2. Try to reset your iPod again.

If this doesn't bring it back to a state where Windows will find it and identify it as an iPod to iTunes, then you might have bigger problems. You can also take a look in the Windows device manager and make sure it's identified correctly. In my Windows 7 system, it shows up both in the "disk drives" list and in the "portable devices" list, and it's the latter interface that I believe iTunes is using to sync the iPod, restore the factory settings, and so on, not the disk drive interface. Bear in mind that you might need to do the "deep clean" procedure to get rid of and then reinstall the Apple Mobile Device Support part of the iTunes kit, when I did the deep clean, I noticed that that had not been updated when the original 12.2 build got installed by Apple Software Update. Just saying... Good luck.

Note: I was writing this while tt2 was also drafting a reply, so he may have offered some of the same advice.

Thanks DrTom, yes I have performed a hard reset several times during this process. I have swapped out the USB cord to rule that out. It doesn't show up as a portable device, just a separate disk drive, and this is on 3 different machines, 2 of which I installed itunes from scratch today that had never had it installed previously, all machines using windows 7 (32 or 64 bit), or windows 8 OS. What is odd is on all 3 machines, it went through a search for driver routine once I plugged it in, and then treats it like a usb disk drive, as someone mentioned on an earlier post.

Looking at all the posts, things seem to be going from bad to worse here. I thought I'd download todays 12.2.1.16, foolishly thinking problems would be solved. Sadly all of the 'Not Found' issues are still around and now my IC160 will no longer reset, whatever method I use ! When connected for syncing sometimes it just hangs, others it starts to sync after about 2 minutes.

More often than not Windows identifies the iPod is connected as a portable drive, but iTunes doesn't identify it as even being connected.

Where do I find 'Ipod Service' and how do I check if it's running ?

Of course, thanks turingtest2. Checked it, found it, it's running.

In a fit of futility, I've just written to Apple Customer Services requesting a fix or compensation for perfectly good iPods (forgot to mention previously I have 2, both affected) that can no longer be used as intended. I am not expecting anything, but it made me feel better.......briefly.

If it works with Windows 8.1 (or the pre-release Windows 10) but not with Windows 7 where it used to work just fine then it's almost certainly Apple's bug and a regression. Apple needs to fix it. It's not like everyone with an iPod Classic is going to go to Windows 10 ASAP.

FWIW, I installed the 12.2.1 kit on my Windows 7 laptop (not on my desktop, yet) and the Apple Mobile Device Support doesn't get updated So don't expect a fix there.

Since updating to 12.2 cannot update Ipod Classic
