Will I be able to retrieve my photos if I have to restore my 4s?

My 4S is outdated, I tried to update it thru iTunes and was told I couldn't, there was an error.

I unplugged it and replugged in, now I'm being prompted to RESTORE my phone. There is no option for backup.

I'm afraid if I select 'restore' that I will lose all my photos. PLEASE HELP!

I had selected 'Backup" before I tried to update the phone, but now I'm not able to restore it. The option is grayed out.
