What does the little circle going round to the right of the search box mean?

There's a little circle with a break in it going round-and-round in the top right of iTunes, to the right of the search box. Nothing anywhere says what this means, nor is there a tooltip if you mouse over it. What's the point in having little icons and not telling you want they mean? Presumably it means iTunes is doing...something. What, though?
