MacBook Pro Analog to Digital Audio Converter

I wish to convert my vinyl LP's to digital and want to know how good is the quality of the inbuilt analogue to digital converter in my Mid 2009 MBP. Would I be better off buying an external converter to do the conversion, or leave it up to the MBP? I have a mid level HI Fi system, based on a Arcam Solo unit.

I have a more than decent turntable/tone arm/cartridge presently so do not feel inclined to replace it at the moment. I have done a bit of research and found a reasonable phono preamp with a digital output that should suffice. It has good reviews. I will use it to enjoy my LP's directly, and to record them to MP3 for use in my car. Thanks for your comments.
