Finder shows devices that are offline

Hi there,

I recently sold my Mini Mac and it is physically not on my network anymore but it still shows up in the Finders Sidebar Network Share section on my MacBookPro. Other network shares disappear when they are turned of or are offline. I restart my network router, Time Capsule and of course the MBP with all xRAM resets but no difference. How do I get rid of this?

While investigating the topic and following a recommendation I found somewhere I recognized that the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.preferences.sharing.plist is empty on my machine - no clue if that is an issue, too or if there is some correlation?

Hold down the command key and drag it out of the sidebar.

Hi Linc Davis,

thank you for your reply. Unfortunately your hint does not work. The Finder does not allow me any dragging (not with the command key nor with any other shift, ctrl, alt keys). I also tried it with an admin account - same story.

Maybe there is a config file that holds these ghost-information?

Long shot.

Do a backup.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.

Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.

If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Hi Eric,

thanks for your reply. I tried your advice but no change. The 'ghost'-MacMini still showed up and the dragging does not work either.

What finally solved my issue: I rebooted all network components (Time Capsule and AirPort Express) again. After that the MacMinis are gone.

About Wake on Demand and Bonjour Sleep Proxy - Apple Support

The overview is that Time Capsules (& Apple TV's) can save bonjour service info & keep supplying that on the network even after a device is powered off or sleeping. Sometimes it fails to remove the device when it totally disappears. A reboot normally flushes it.
