I have connected to an SMB windows share but it keeps going back to the top level in finder. Is there a way to create a shortcut on the desktop to the exact path of the windows share? The macbook is currently connected to a network directory (active directory). Can anyone assist?

Select the Folder
Finder > File > Make Alias
drag the Alias it makes to the desktop or anywhere else you want it. Double-Click on the Alias and the Folder pops open.
Later, I think if that Shared Volume happens to be not mounted when you click, you will get a Sharing/login Dialog so you can mount it.
If you really use this a lot, you could co-opt this feature of the Finder:
New Finder windows show: > Other... (and specify that folder)
