BT Audio Connection Dropping with iPhone 6, iOS 8.4 and 2013 Subaru Forester

I've seen a lot of posts on these boards related to Bluetooth issues and Subarus, but none seem to cover my specific issue so I'm submitting this new post to the boards in the hopes that someone can help.

My handsfree calling functionality works flawlessly, both inbound and outbound. My audio connection generally works OK, but it will regularly disconnect or drop out. Usually the music will stop and the audio system panel will show the phone disconnecting, or some variation of that problem. I can sometimes get it to reconnect by cycling through the various audio modes then back to BT audio, and sometimes it will just restart on its own. But it's happening more often, and I cannot seem to get it to consistently stay connected. It will always connect and start up when the vehicle is started/restarted but I can count on it disconnecting at some arbitrary time during a drive.

I have followed all of the posts for deleting/reinstalling the phone, both through the steering wheel and audio system as separate installation for handsfree calling and audio respectively. I've even gone as far as disconnecting the battery and reinstalling the entire audio system from scratch, then adding back the iPhone as a new phone. I thought that this had corrected the issue, no disconnects for a few days, but it just started up again.

The only thing that I can come up with is that I have a LOT of bluetooth connections set up on my iPhone for a variety of devices. None of those are active when I'm riding around in my Subaru but it's possible that the iPhone is looking for one or more of those connections and disconnecting from the Subaru in the process. Not sure, I thought about deleting all of them but it seems kind of silly, overkill and inconvenient as I do use those other connections from time to time. And none of those other connections are causing me problems of any kind, it's only the iPhone's BT connection to the Subaru that's causing me grief.

FYI, for what it's worth, my local Subaru service center indicates that so long as the iPhone will successfully pair with the Subaru's audio system in any way shape or form, there is nothing that they can or will do. Thanks Subaru 🙂

I'm wondering if this is at all related to the problem I've been having.

I have a new 2015 Crosstrek Hybrid Touring model. I have no problem at all getting my iPhone 6 to connect to the car's bluetooth, and I can play the music on my iTunes through the car's infotainment system, and make and receive calls just fine.

Here's my problem: After SOME, but not all, phone calls using the car's bluetooth, the radio stops working. I can't get FM or AM at all, though I can get SiriusXM (I'm still on my free trial for that). Even when I listen to Sirius, it cuts out for a minute or two at a time (or more), and I get silence, then the Sirius will usually work again for a bit. I can also switch to listen to iTunes from my phone using the bluetooth, but just like Sirius, it goes silent periodically for long-ish (1+ minute) periods of time. When that happens, I've figured out that the songs keep playing, I just can't hear them on the car's stereo (or on the phone, since it is still connected to the car through the bluetooth). I can make or receive more calls, they're fine, I just can't get regular broadcast radio, and have these coming-and-going problems with iTunes and Sirius.

When this happens, if I change Sirius stations, it often takes quite some time for the station change to actually happen, and if I change a couple too many times (which I do, since I'm getting extremely frustrated with my very expensive car stereo system on my brand new car not working at this point, as well as with the possibility that I'll be spending the bulk of my 40-minute commute in SILENCE because of the problems), it just stops working completely, and the car's screen gets the spinning-circle-thinking thing.

The one and only way to fix this problem, and this works every single time, is to turn the car's engine off and back on. Which is all well and good when I have a red light to sit at for 15-30 seconds or more, but not so helpful when I'm on the freeway.

I have taken my car back to Subaru three times now (they have it right now, in fact) for them to try to fix it and, so far, they have not been able to. They're apparently installing yet another new infotainment system in the car today, to see if that will work. Given everything, I'm not thinking it will, though I cannot figure out if it's a Subaru problem or an Apple problem. I have iOS 8.4 on my phone, and I'm afraid to upgrade to 8.4.1 lest things get even worse.

One more interesting note-- I had a 2014 Crosstrek Hybrid (not Touring, but the lower model with the slightly less spiffy infotainment system-- no Sirius, no Navi, but still with bluetooth calling and all of that) before it was destroyed in a tornado and I bought the '15. When I upgraded from an iPhone 4S to the iPhone 6, it worked JUST FINE with the 2014 Crosstrek's system. (OK, I had the pairing problem that everyone talks about, where I had to keep repairing the phone to the car every time I got in. Per one suggestion I found on these forums, I paired the phone using the steering wheel buttons instead of the dashboard, and it worked perfectly from then on.) I bought the '15 at the beginning of July, and I have had these problems with the phone from the very beginning.

I just got the phone in May, and I have no intention of changing phones or cars because of this. Apple and/or Subaru need to fix this problem, it's absolutely ridiculous that my $750 phone won't work with my $31,000 car.

Hey Apple, hey Subaru, there are A LOT of us who have both of your products, and NO VALID REASON why they should not play nice together!! FIX IT!!!!!

'15 WRX STI, iPhone 6, apple watch here. I have this exact same problem. Almost every time I drive lately after a few minutes of driving, the bluetooth audio drops but sometimes the radio will continue to display track information. Sometimes the display says "Please wait connecting" or whatever. When this happens, usually the BT icon stays lit on the radio but the battery and signal strength icons disappear. Sometimes cycling the audio input back around to bluetooth audio fixes the issue but 75% of the time the car needs to be completely shut off and turned back on. Restarting the phone doesn't work, toggling bluetooth off then on does not work and toggling airplane mode doesn't either. I have an apple watch as well which I know communicates via bluetooth with the phone. The start of this problem didn't directly coincide with me getting the watch but it has only happened since I've had the watch.

Update to my original post -- I was able to get Subaru to replace the audio unit under warranty, and I have had no issues ever since (knock on wood). The main thing that I stick to is basically never changing any of the BT settings either on the iPhone or the car that pertain to one another. I also will not let my wife sync up her iPhone to my car, which I believe had something to do with the issues I was running into. I still have a TON of BT connections set up on my iPhone for everything from wireless dongles to wireless speakers to other car audio BT systems. None of those things cause any problems. I think the source of my particular issue was having that 2nd iPhone set up with BT on that stock Subaru audio unit, and then removing that 2nd phone, that's pretty much when bad things started happening. For now, all is well. And for anyone with these issues who has a Subaru and it is under warranty, your best bet is getting your local dealer to replace the audio unit and keep it simple from there on in. Good luck!

Ok, this post triggered a thought about my situation. Back in May my wife had my car for a few days and paired her phone with it. Shortly there after is when my problems began. I didn't put 2 and 2 together until you mentioned it. I unpaired her phone yesterday and have driven the car 4 times with ZERO problems so far (the problem was occurring every time I drove).

Perhaps I'm jumping the gun because I haven't given it enough time but I believe this is the answer. The car can't have more than one paired device.

Lame. I'll be complaining to subaru now.

Thanks for your help!
