Apple music volume too low = deal breaker

iPhone 5 - iOS8.4

I've read all the posts out there about volume limit and volume check and that is not the issue. The issue is that Apple music just doesn't play at the equivalent (normal) volume of any other service or input device in the car, my home theater system, my portable speaker, etc.

I'm an Apple fan but this is a deal breaker... It *****... I love the service. The radio algorithms and music selection are top notch, but there are other music services that play at a much louder, more crisp sounding level. I hope Apple does something about this.

Anyone else feel this way?

I have found this is as well now on Mac Sierra with the latest Itunes. The universal control in the preferences is ok, but even that and the individual song volume control are not enough, and then when you go back to other apps that use sound you get blasted. but I found a horizontal volume control at the top of the itunes window that seems to solve the problem and it separate from overall computer volume which is the key. This horizontal control is connected with the 'controls' menu 'increase' volume etc. Now I can make it as loud as I need it and it's on same level as other apps.

I reckon spotify is just very very slightly better, but not that noticeable on my iPad Air or my iPhone 5 so that it woukd make a great deal of difference to me. Are you sure you don't have some sound setting or EQ turned down etc. it's really not that noticeable as I switch between Spotify and Apple Music that I would be complaining about it.

I have just this very second, run some tests on my iPad Air v1 using:

(a) the in-built factory speaker

(b) a pair of in-ear headphones (not apple brand) plugged into the devices headphone socket

(c) a kitsound boobar Bluetooth speaker (Rechargeable)

I ran the same piece of music (Peter Gabriel track) in spotify and then in Apple Music. I can assure you that there is hardly any noticeable difference between the two apps, I am only using the free version of spotify so I don't have access to 'extreme' stream quality so i ran it on both normal and high settings.

I can honestly assure you it's very difficult to notice the difference between the two apps. They are practically the same volume and quality... I have even just got my wife involved with the tests and she can't notice the difference in volume or quality at all.

Perhaps wait and see what others have to say here on this forum, but I can't see any issue to complain of. Do you have more than one device you can test in case it is a volume setting or hardware issue?

I'm assuming you know about the setting in restrictions etc. aswell as volume limits and EQ settings and it's not just a single slide-bar to control the volume.

Anyhow let's see what others have to say, but for me the Apple Music quality and volume is almost indistinguishable with the output from spotify. I have not tried the other apps/services you mentioned, at this moment in time.

I've just done the same three tests, but this time i used my iPhone 5 and again my wife cannot tell the difference in sound level or quality.

I would say both spotify, set to normal stream and Apple Music are about the same volume and quality.

If I put spotify on the higher setting then 'perhaps' spotify just beats Apple Music by quality, but the volume level is still virtually the same, maybe spotify just has the edge, but it's really difficult to set them apart.

If I had to say I think spotify may have a very slightly better bass sound.

As before, I have no EQ turned on and no volume restrictions set.

Thanks for all the testing... The one place I notice the biggest difference is in my car - that is currently where I listen to my music the loudest. My car has a digital volume output meter. I always have to turn up the volume to get the same volume as I would if I were listening to the radio or another music app. My car output is ridiculously noticeable, but I'll recheck my home theater... perhaps it is just my car (it's a Ford with Sync - maybe the Microsoft powered service doesn't like the Apple Music app 😝).

When I listen to Apple Music via bluetooth in my car, the volume is RIDICULOUSLY low! I too, tried my other music services, like Spotify and Amazon, and the volume is fine with those. I read this whole thread so far, and my EQ is off, so that's not the problem. I have no qualms using Spotify or Amazon, but if I want to listen to MY music library, I have no other alternative.....I have to use Apple Music. This is most definitely a problem. Oh, also I have the same problem another user has, in that if I get a text alert or some other alert, the alert will be loud, then it will somehow make the music louder (the way it's supposed to be), but I have the volume turned up on my car stereo, so it comes on SUPER LOUD and scares the crap out of me. Not exactly safe.......

So i have discovered the cause of the problem in my case and hopefully it will work with others as well. It's actually an app...FACEBOOK...that is causing this problem. When i was listening to music and couldn't figure why it was so low i started killing apps one by one and when Facebook was killed, normal volume level. I have verified this twice so far. I have disabled Facebook sounds and badges so hopefully that will help. Might have to disable notifications all together which is dumb but it is the root cause for me.

I feel the exact same way... the volume is still lower (even with the EQ off) and the sound quality is just not as good as any of the other services I'm using (Spotify) or have used. It stinks, because I really like the way the service is setup... but in the long run I tend to listen to the imperfections of a compressed song if it sounds bad and a lot of songs sound bad through Apple Music when compared to Spotify (even using the recommended lowest quality setting). Ridiculous to not have better quality, but it's Apple's way or the highway and...
