I am in China, but cannot access the internet. I can use Facetime and Whatsapp. Help. My browser is Safari.

To use WiFi you will need to use a service providers hotspot. This could be at an internet cafe and they will all be different. Which one are you trying to connect with.
I have tried several places where wifi is available (so I can use Whatsapp etc) but I keep getting a message from Safari saying it cannot connect to the server so I am unable to access any sites such as Google. As I said I do not have a service provider
The "service provider" we are referring to would be the place where you tried to access their WiFi. Sounds like you actually did not connect to the WiFi hotspot in question but without knowing specifics it is hard to give you an answer. Have you talked to the proprietor of the businesses? Did you login to their site?

I am accessing the wifi as I used Facetime to call home. I know some internet sites are blocked in China and I was wondering if Safari was too. If so does anyone know another method of accessing the internet? Sorry if I am not giving enough information but up to this point I have just switched on my phone and used it without wondering how it works!!!!!!
Types of network you attempted to connect with, credentials and methods of authentication they use etc (i.e.: is their a home portal you need to login to) this is a very common method.

For a general 'fix' (maybe) erase and restore the phone to factory settings.
What service provider are you connected to? You would have to contact them for assistance.
Hi, I am not using a service provider. I am travelling and only use wifi and internet to avoid charges.
What wifi network are you trying to connect to? What happens when you try to connect to it?

If you can use WhatsApp etc then you are connected to the internet, more info is needed.

did you validated the wifi password correctly? sometimes, the chats works without validate de wifi network password.
