Apple watch locked and can't unlock

I have a message on my apple watch telling me it is locked and that I need to unlock my iphone to start using it. The iphone is unlocked.

I don't have a passcode set on the apple watch and if I go into the passcode section on the apple watch app on iphone I get a message telling the the apple watch is currently lock and I should unlock it to continue. But no way of doing this...

Sequence of events that got me here:

1) apple watch and lost power completely as I hadn't worn for a few days

2) earlier today I setup apple pay on my iphone

3) then later today got watch and charged it up

4) now it tells me it is locked (which its never done before) and I seem to have no way of unlocking it. no password was ever set.

Is this something to do with me installing apple pay on the iphone without the watch having a passcode set...? How do I get out of this problem?

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

It looks like your Apple Watch is asking you to unlock it, but you can't enter a passcode. You mention you also set up Apple Pay on your iPhone.

As mentioned in Set up your Apple Watch, your Watch needs a passcode for features like Apple Pay. If you don't see a number pad to enter your passcode on the Watch, restart it:

Restart your Apple Watch - Apple Support

Press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider.
Drag the slider to turn off your device completely.
After you turn off your Apple Watch, press and hold the side button again until you see the Apple logo.

If you still can't enter the passcode, follow the steps in If you forgot the passcode for your Apple Watch.
